Markos made some great posts on Democratic Presidential candidate, Bill Richardson.
After skimming through each of these posts, I decided to do some research on Richardson's appearances and news from Iowa. That is when I found this posting on Ipol(Iowa Politics) on Richardson's "Lord" remark. Ipol quotes Richardson's Press Secretary that the Governor was just joking. But, he went further to go on the record that Richardson believes that "Iowa is God's Country."
Here is the Ipol post:
Yes, He Was Joking
At a union-sponsored Labor Day picnic today in Sioux City, New Mexico Governor and presidential candidate Bill Richardson told the crowd,
"Iowa, for good reason, for constitutional reasons, for reasons related to the Lord should be the first caucus and primary."
Not that there's anything wrong with the sentiment, of course, but the religious element in the quote struck me as, shall we say, out of character for the candidate. Never fear, though: Richardson's National Press Secretary Tom Reynolds assures me that the Gov was just joking. "But," Reynolds added, "the Governor does believe that Iowa is God's Country."
So, there you go: talk radio scandal averted. That is, until someone in New Mexico hears that God's Country is actually out this way....
This makes me wonder: Does Richardson have a deal with God that he is keeping a secret? Or, do you think the campaign is trying suade conservative votes his way?
Speaking from Richardson's stand-point: "This is what I would do..." Stop using conservative-like talking-points for your speeches and campaign remarks by your staff. It makes you more like you want to take Bush's religious responsibilities when he leaves office.
