Petraeus is quite a guy! A political General. He's not only controlled the agenda for his leader, he wants the Oval Office, too, maybe not next year, but in 2012.
Oh, and don't go looking too closely at his past accomplishments in Iraq; they're flashy, but they didn't last. And his statistics? Amazing what you can do with statistics when you put your mind to it: like painting success in the face of failure.
And yet Petraeus and Bush have cornered Congress. The Democrats can do nothing except face filibusters and a Presidential veto without Republican defections, and that's what Petraeus has prevented: Republican defections. So, we can expect more of the same.
Nothing's going to change, because, no matter how the Democrats in Congress try to wiggle out of it, they don't really have a strong enough majority to pass anything substantive on withdrawing from Iraq.
So, Petraeus will be seen as a hero, the man on the white horse, the man who saved the President's ass, in short a candidate, maybe even for 2008!
