Unless it's a revolution taking place anywhere but the United States.
The Orange Revolution in the Ukraine was televised. The protests in Myanmar/Burma are being televised. The American citizens' revolt against the war in Iraq and the Bush Administration is not being televised on mainstream media. If you wish to see images of the the anti-war movement, you have to search the web. Thank God for YouTube and Google!!
If you tuned into any of the "news" programs in the last few days, you saw plenty of stories on the protesters and the force used against them in Myanmar. Does anyone else think it's strange that the reason behind the protests is an increase in fuel prices? The violence against the monks and others protesting is horrific. Their freedom of speech is being taken away from them at gunpoint. Our government uses a less violent (as of this moment) means of squelching our First Amendment rights. They talk of democracy and the rights to demonstrate...
"I call on all nations that have influence with the regime to join us in supporting the aspirations of the Burmese people and to tell the Burmese junta to cease using force on its own people who are peacefully expressing their desire for change," Bush
"I want them to know that the rest of the world does condemn these actions of the Burmese government, the harassment and jailing of political peaceful demonstrators," Mrs. Bush said. "All these demonstrators want is for the government to be responsive to them." Laura Bush
Yet herd American protesters into "Free Speech Zones", or arrest them for staging "Die-ins", or holding signs and shouting slogans during Senate hearings. The Anti-war groups are only peacefully expressing their desire for change, and asking their government to be responsive to them.
Unless you have a computer and search for anti-war events daily, as I do, you probably would not have heard anything about the anti-war march and rally organized by Troops Out Now, which took place yesterday. This was the culmination of a week long encampment at the Capitol.
Try googling "protest" in "News", you will get many stories on Myanmar. Google "encampment capitol" in "News", and there are a handful of stories on the seven days of action which were never reported on any of the television "news" shows. Only the educated, curious, logged-on-American who knows what to look for, will read about these brave souls who are standing up to power.
I've scanned the so-called TV "news" channels all this weekend to find some mention of the march or encampment, and there has been none. FoxNews.com did have a picture of the "Breasts Not Bombs" group. If that's what it takes to get attention, I say whip them out!!
The news has been cancelled.
