28%

When Dubya first slid into below 30% territory last May, many of us thought that he would be in Nixon territory on a permanent basis.  But we saw his numbers stabilize over the summer and then to our shock, he once again pulled a rabbit out of the hat and delivered Zarqawi.  This coincided with the 5th anniversary of 9/11 and a fall in oil prices and suddenly, his numbers were back in the forties again.  The MSM went ape, per usually and Tweety even imagined his numbers rising above 50% before Christmas.  But then the election happened, Iraq became explosive and everyone saw it as a Civil War (except the administration) the ISG report came out and said Dubya should declare victory and get the Hell out.  But like a good little Neo-Con puppet, Dubya would have none of it.  And then his numbers began to slide anew.  Now, they have finally reached where they were in May and have surpassed that low mark.

CBS has just come out with a poll that has Dubya at 28%.
This is lower than the Harris poll last May, were he was at 29%.  The whole 'surge' idea has failed spectacularly.  Earlier today, ABC/Washington Post had a pollwhere he was at a 51% strongly dissaproval rating.  The highest in history for any President, including Nixon.  That means a majority of Americans now have the same feelings towards this President that all us on this Blog do.  Not a large minority, not a plurality, a Majority.

Per Pat208, here is a key graph:

Mr. Bush’s overall approval rating has fallen to just 28 percent, a new low, while more than twice as many (64 percent) disapprove of the way he's handling his job.

Two-thirds of Americans remain opposed to the president's plan for sending more than 20,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq — roughly the same number as after Mr. Bush announced the plan. And 72 percent believe he should seek congressional approval for the troop increase.

It should be noted that Clinton's approval was above 60% at the same time in his second term.  And that was about the time that the Lewinsky scandal was breaking.

This poll is not a complete loss for Dubya.  When asked if the respondents would be in favor of the troop increase "if it increased U.S.’ chances for success?" 53% said yes, while 38% said no.  However, the poll did clarify the statement with:

However, Americans aren't convinced the U.S. needs a troop increase to achieve its goals in Iraq. Just 26 percent think that's needed, about the same number that think those goals can be reached without sending in more troops.

Forty-one percent think the U.S. can't achieve its goals regardless of troop levels.

Oops.  Foiled again...
