I realized tonight that this is the second time I’ve done TC on a big night – I had TC for August 8, 2006, Connecticut primary night. And as I did then, I’m not going to pretend we want to talk about much of anything else.
My big response, besides a vague nausea that is, perhaps surprisingly, not due to drinking – I’ve only had a few sips of wine - is to Nancy Pelosi’s grin at the beginning when Bush said "Madame Speaker." How great was that? That immediate, clearly involuntary and entirely and sincerely joyful expression was one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen lately. So while my reasoned responses to this speech will come later after I read the text, I am glad I watched, for that one lovely moment.
The vague nausea I mentioned might be due to too many potato chips and cookies while waiting for the beginning of a conference call President of the House Freshman Class Paul Hodes (yay Paul!) and Democratic Caucus Vice-Chair John Larson did for bloggers and other such. I posted about that (the conference call, not the potato chips and cookies) over at Blue Hampshire, where I said, perhaps awkwardly, that though the very nice things both of them said about the importance of bloggers were, well, very nice, the important thing to me is that the Democratic majority be responsible and accountable – so conference calls like that should be seen as important not for the flattery but for the sense that talking to regular people matters – as Senator Dick Durbin is apparently about to be doing in a diary here. That stuff matters to me.
