Sordid Lieberman

We can categorically assert that any intelligent person who supports the Iraq occupation is lying, or intentionally attempting to deceive. Thus we accept that the statements of Bill Kristol, Cheney, Perle and Ledeen are no more than morally treasonous blather.
Nonetheless, there is something especially loathsome and revolting about Lieberman's contributions to this toxic pool. Of course there is a special odium attaching to the turncoat; the ostensibly liberal man and Democrat who on one issue  runs interference for Bush, taking the side of the demons.

Yet there is something else that sets Lieberman apart from the rest of the jackals. This is his tone. By and large the rest of them lie with the  truculent brio of a John Gotti or an Al Capone. The style model here is Newt Gingrich.
Lierbrman in contrast, cloaks his foul utterances in the guise of sweet reason; appearing before us as a would-be soulful gentle and thoughtful man. The effect is nauseating. In effect he practices a double hypocrisy: that of his words and that of his very being. All men who would deceive practice false sincerity. Yet Lieberman's version of insincerity seems especially debased. One is reminded of Hannah Arendt's thoughts on the banality             of evil
