Elvis Costello to Play Hillary Clinton's Birthday Bash
Hillary Clinton-- presidential candidate, New York Senator, and former First Lady-- will celebrate her 60th birthday in style, with a bash taking place October 25 at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The celebration, which is also a fundraiser for her presidential campaign, will feature a performance by legendary English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello.
That's a pretty good pull for anyone's 60th b-day, no? Could it be that HC's going to start using "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding" for a campaign song? Seems appropriate...
More and more, my politics and music choices are intertwined. Steve Earle, Springsteen, EC, Radiohead, U2... so it makes me wonder how many others like me are out there reading Kos every day. I suspect that, in general, this is a pretty hip indie music lovin' crowd.
I've always felt that on any given day, the greatest rock band in the world is likely some garage band playing a college bar for $2 a head. In my spare time, I run an internet radio station at Musicaljustice.com. I created the station because I felt that most of the bands I love never got played on the radio outside of college radio. The station's grown to the point where I'm even listed on iTunes now, but it's basically all been done so that I can have a soapbox (or a boombox?) to expose new artists I love to the rest of the world.
I think that a lot of college/indie radio tends to ghetto-ize indie bands by only playing them and ditching the more successful acts once they've had some hits. At my station, I try to play up-and-coming artists next to the U2's and REM's. For me, this kind of integrated playlist means there are always some nuggets of familiarity to grab a hold of as I discover new music.
I'm always on the hunt for new bands to play on my station and I spend a lot of time reading music blogs and hitting places like Myspace to try to find the next big thing. Even so, I'm betting that you can help me find stuff I would never hear otherwise. So I'm curious about what new bands you're listening to.
But even more so, I'm wondering if this a worthy discussion for this forum? Would a regular indie music diary add to the overall Kos community? What do you think about the intersection between liberal politics and indie music?
