It's time's like this I love living here.
Fox News and Bill O'Reilly have condemned San Francisco for having the audacity to vote on issues that are important to them and expressing their will at the polls. The nerve of these people!
And all I can do is laugh, again, and imagine an upraised middle finger, rising from the Bay, and casting it's shadow all the way to Washington.
Once again, as with Mayor Newsom's bold stand on civil rights, I delight as the Right squirms and yells about those goddamned hippies in San Francisco getting uppity again. Daring to vote to protect their children from aggressive recruiting tactics (or so some would have us believe), and electing to heavily restrict handgun ownership (which I somewhat disagree with). Once again, San Francisco stands up, spits in the face of the establishment, and
dares anyone to do anything about it.
San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley can be counted on to try different approaches to many problems. They may not always work, but they explore alternatives in all directions of the political compass. And that to me is the essence of progressive government.
Every single voter here in the Bay Area should be proud of the fact that they're pissing off Washington, that they derailed the governor's special election, and that they remain a bastion of liberal political theory in a country still largely in the grip of an antagonistic political ideology.
Stand up and join me in flipping off the White House, Fox News, Bill O'Reilly, and all the rest of those blowhards as we chart are own damned course.
