Last night saw Tony Blair suffering his first ever Commons defeat in a vote on proposals to combat Terrorism.

The Government Bill that would have given police 90 days to detain suspected terrorists without charging them was defeated by 31 votes. Backbench rebels in Blair's own Labour Party joined the Conservative and Liberal Democrat opposition in defeating the legislation.
Blair's approach is much like Bush's - either you are with him totally, or you are against him. There were reports that Home Secretary Charles Clarke was touting some compromise proposals for 30 or 60 day detention periods, but Blair's belligerent attitude seems to have cost him. All the UK media are speculating that this is the beginning of the end of Blair's reign.
I really hope that the bubble of fear and mistrust that has been built around us all since 2001 is about to pop. With Libby indicted, Blair defeated in his attempt to erode our civil liberties, and the Democratic gains the other day things are looking up a little bit.
I also don't see it diaried on Kos yet that Judith Miller has resigned from NYT.
