It’s clear that Bush/Cheney identify themselves as a dictatorial government, even if they don’t call themselves that. They only thing they lack is a physical force to police the home front. Over the past few years, when things looked really ugly, I could comfort myself by with that thought that at least the military, bound by law and honor to obey the Commander in Chief, was far away from the home front and could not be effectively used to quell domestic discontent, if it came to that. I also had, and still have, grave doubts that the professional military would take action against Americans at home for a bunch of dead end DC flunkies.
Blackwater would have no such compunctions and answers to only a few in the Bush/Cheney cabal. It is a classic paramilitary unit. Americans in Blackwater wouldn't fire on Americans? Easily remedied- hire another foreign national who will.
Blackwater has gotten a lot of mainstream press lately for firing on civilians, which they've been doing since the beginning. Why are there graphic descriptions of unprovoked firing on civilians coming to the forefront now? Do we really think that Iraq is sovereign enough to kick them out? Do we really think the Bush administration is susceptible to public pressure? If they leave Iraq, do you think it won’t be because Bush/Cheney told them to?
Blackwater may be coming home to the US while the military and national guard remain pinned down in Iraq. Shortly after the media gets middle America scared of them. And just in time for the 2008 elections.
Seems unlikely, but so has every other monthly outrage since 2002. If Bush/Cheney expand their executive power even a bit (and they don't seem the types to turn that sort of opportunity down) domestic Blackwater may become uncomfortably familiar.
