With the recent Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/... article discussing the possibility of Senator Webb being a possible running mate, I believe that if Barack Obama wants to win the nomination, he must, and I repeat, he MUST come out and select Senator Webb (prior to the voting) if he wants to win the nomination. The Post article talked a whole lot about Webb, but no mention of Barack. Instead, it had a thinly veiled feeling that it would be Hillary.
Let's not forget that Obama campaigned for Jim Webb in 2006. http://www.cbsnews.com/... Moreover, as Lowell of Raising Kaine has mentioned quite clearly, http://www.raisingkaine.com/... there are reasons why Clinton and Webb wouldn't go together. First, Hillary supported the Iraq War, whereas both Obama and Webb did not (from the start). Moreover, Hillary voted for the Iran measure (which may be what the Administration was looking for), whereas Obama and Webb did not (actually, Obama didn't vote, but said he was against it). Obama is really down in the polls.
If he wants to reignite his 'hope' campaign as we saw in 2004 with his convention speech, he needs to pick Webb and he needs to do it now. Some may say that Webb's departure will give the seat in the Senate up. HOwever, Democratic Governor Tim Kaine would put another Democrat, so that wouldn't be a problem. I think Obama will trounce Hillary where he to do that. More importantly, as Lowell pointed out in the above linked piece, Webb would most certainly put a number of states in play (including Virginia). Lastly, Webb being a vet, and his son being in Iraq, and his overall economic populism, would propel the Democrats to the White House for sure.
One last thing... I support Obama. However, if Hillary wins the nomination, I will not sit out, and let the GOP capture the white house. I will do everything I can to help the campaign get into the White House. The people who are currently arguing that they will not support Hillary (I'm talking about Liberals and Progressives), are the same who gave the Presidency to Bush (so many of them voted for the self-centered Nader in 2000). So please, it doesn't matter who the candidate is, we can't be naive and just not vote or our candidate. Otherwise, we'll end up w a crazy moonbat as a President, and the Supreme Court will surely overturn many advances that we've worked so hard. Think of it this way. If for no other reason, we must vote for Hillary (if it comes down to it), to get the Supreme Court back.
In the meantime, lets hope Barack gets the nod (and as I argue in this diary, he won't get it w/out a strong move such as choosing Webb as his VP running mate prior to January).
