The Miami Herald’s ombudsman, Edward Schumacher-Matos, uses up his space in the Sunday paper to dig into the "contribution" the Herald made to cover Bill Clinton’s speech on Hillary’s behalf.
Why don’t I care about this? Media organizations have been paying to cover the news since time began. They insist vociferously on paying a fair share of travel costs, for instance, flying along with the president on foreign travels. This may be a matter of regret for the accounting department that has to pay the bill for a lot of first-class travel, but so be it. They could get in to concerts or sports events free but some insist on buying a ticket. But paying $50 to get in to a political rally gets reported as a donation to the candidate.

The article reports that Herald political writer Beth Reinhard and her editor, Jay Ducassi, worried about having to defend themselves "in the fierce blogosphere that might take the contribution out of context." Dear me, we’re just pussycats. Until the Herald starts donating to the Republicans!
