For Halloween, please slay some vampires.
Every day, you can strive to be Energy Smart at Home.
But, I ask, what will you do this weekend?
Chores?
Watch a football game or two (or 10)?
Or ...
Global Warming is a massive challenge. It requires serious commitment for change toward a better tomorrow, change from government and from individuals. Government action can help drive (and facilitate) individual action. And, well, individual action (individuals acting in concert) can help drive government action.
Well, this weekend provides opportunities for expressing your voice publically, to demonstrate that Global Warming matters not just to the future, not just to humanity, but to voters.
Step It Up for the Planet, for our future
This Saturday is Step it Up. The 3 November rallies have a purpose, a clear pupose. To get as many politicians (from all levels of government) and as many candidates as possible to publically commit to the four 1 Sky priorities:
* an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050,
* a 10% reduction target by 2010, to set the wheels rolling in the right direction,
* a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants, and
* a Green Jobs Corps to help fix homes and businesses so those targets can be met.
Let us be clear, the situation is urgent -- Global Warming is not an issue that can be dealt with in some indeterminate time in the future. It is on us now, we are already feeling the impacts Globally. And, each moment that passes irreversibly sets the stage for a far worse situation in the future.
The best science tells us we have barely a decade to start the fundamental transformation of our economy and to lead the world in the same direction or else, in the words of NASA's Jim Hansen, we will face a "totally different planet." (He went on to say that the "1 Sky" priorities "describe just the kind of trajectory we need" to start solving the problem). A decade's not very long—we've got to get going.
Saturday, 3 November, take the time to Step it Up for a better world.
A Shifting of Power?
Also, this weekend, the DC area will see a flood of committed college activists. As of last information, over 5000 people have signed up for Power Shift. Some information from an email I received.
Several thousand young climate activists will be stepping it up this weekend and delivering a message that Lieberman-Warner is not acceptable.
What is Lieberman-Warner? Draft Global Warming legislation that will, in its approach to Cap and Trade, give $100s of billions away to today's polluters out of the pockets of average Americans.
Want to care about Global Warming legislation? Confused over 80% or 90% by 2050? Well, when it comes to Cap and Trade, consider that, quite literally, there is likely a trillion dollars (or more) on the table. Money that could create a prosperous, climate-friendly society. Or, money that line the pockets of those already wealthy through polluting the commons.
Power Shift registration topped 5,000 today, and I imagine that at least half of them will be attending the lobby day on Monday, delivering photos and reports from Step it Up events in the senator and reps' home districts and standing behind the 1 Sky principles.
In any event, here are two ways to spend your weekend, ways to help move the nation (the globe) forward when it comes to Global Warming.
Step it Up all over the nation and, if you can, contribute to shifting power toward reality-based policy-making on Global Warming through participation in Power Shift.
