The New Word: Republicon

(Sorry for the short diary, but I'm up past my night shift bedtime).

Many of us on the left have sought for a word to counter the right's use of the phrase "Democrat Party".  We've experimented with some, such as Publican, Republican American Community, and others, but we couldn't get them to work because they didn't roll off the tongue and were too obvious.

But Republicon works.  It's every bit as subtle as "Democrat Party", and rolls off the tongue easier than "Republican American Community".  But the slight change of one letter implies that the Repugs are con artists, evil, and after your money.

So the new word, my Democratic friends, is REPUBLICON.

The religious fanatics didn't buy the republican party because it was virtuous, they bought it because it was for sale

It's the framing of that word that is problematic.

The "Republic Party" sounds like they claim to represent our 'Republic' which of course they certainly do not.

Republicon Party juxtaposes the word Republican with Neocon. It reminds everyone of the neocon influence on the party, and it also highlights the corruption and criminality of the party with the 'con' at the end.

And, it insults and derides Republicons with the same contempt that Bush uses every time he and his stooges use the phrase 'democrat party.'

Bush does it to demean and belittle democrats. We can do the same by calling them:

      REPUBLICON PARTY.

I simply thought about how the Republicans are con men - complete and utter liars.

        Both analogies are very appropriate.

started pushing the Democrat Party thing.  Years ago.  Then suddenly, it's on tv and you even hear Dems using it.  Amazing.

Hear me out. I've been using this term for months now, hoping that more people would pick up on it. It encapsulates perfectly, the response to the insulting use of the term 'democrat party' by Bush and his stooges. And, it highlights the combination of an insulting perversion of the party's name--as they are doing to Democrats--the new "l" word: Neocon.

I just wish people would see the brilliance of it. And, if you believe in fighting back against the derision of the belittling term "democrat party" then you might be more inclined to start using the response:

    Republicon Party.

    Thanks for this diary.

of course, with accents/regional dialects, it may be difficult to get across aurally. In text, it works very well.

  •  I don't get the outrage about "Democrat party" (0+ / 0-)

I know the background on it... but it just seems like in the past year, it's become this huge "insult". Why do people make such a huge deal about it? To me, it doesn't make me think of "bureaucrat" at all (and that doesn't seem like a big insult, either). I could be wrong, but it seems like people are using the "Democrat party" term a lot more NOW than they did a couple years ago, simply because we're whining about how it's an insult.

Before I learned that it is supposedly an insult, I just figured that the speakers were just lazy and had a poor grasp of the English language.

Now, a lot of liberals have gone overboard, calling out each other when anything that might sound like a slight reference to this is used. For example, some people get "offended" by the word "Democrats". I think we're going overboard in sensitivity, and actually creating a way for them to insult us. When we focus on a silly terminology slight, it diverts our attention away from things that are truly egregious.

Personally, I think "Rethug" and now "Republicon" are much more revealing and effective as insults.
