Hey Everyone.
So, I am waiting on my boss to approve my trip to Baton Rouge Louisiana tomorrow. I write for Congressman Sherrod Brown over at the Ohio-based blog, Grow Ohio.
I pitched an idea today that they liked, and I wanted to run it by you all for tweaking. So here are my thoughts on how we can help a few families in a meaningful way while I am down there participating in the day-to-day (distributing water, etc...).
Basically, I want to adopt a few families. I will use current blogs (Grow Ohio, other Ohio-based blogs, Swing State Project, Kos, MyDD, and all the blogs that will write about it) to tell the story of a few families impacted by the natural disaster and man-made disaster perpetuated by incompetent leadership. I will post their stories, photos, video, and items they need to help re-start their lives.
Those items might range from clothes, to food, toys for the children, or even a ride from where they are located currently to someone on the list at hurricane housing. I would imagine people from the online community would then help provide for the familes involved in the effort.
Many have already given to the Red Cross and other organizations. Obviously, that's terrific and feels good. But it is my hope that by personalizing the situation it will encourage more people to get involved and allow many of us to do more than just send cash.
So... Talk to me. What do you think? What questions would you have? What can we do to make this work better?
My fingers are cross that this trip gets approved and I can get out of my apartment in Ohio down to where help is needed.
Thanks for listening,
Tim
