We had a
candidate forum last night (first of three), and the topic came up...
Responding to an audience question, Esquivel said he thought students from other countries should be immersed in English-speaking families. He cited his father, who immigrated to the county, as an example of someone who urged his own children to learn English as fast as possible.
"Should we teach bilingual -- I don't think so," said Esquivel.
Doty said he supported bilingual education, although acknowledging it's a big cost for schools. "The price tag is high and the imperative is high," he said.
My opponent started his answer by stating he was the only person in the room able to speak to the question (imagine my surprise, seated next to him, having just answered, being a TEACHER... not to mention the surprise of the other Hispanics in the room, some of whom got up and left at this point). He is quite outspoken that he is Hispanic (visit his site and note the META tags...) and cannot speak a word of Spanish. He wears this as a badge of honor.
In a second moment of brilliance, he told the moderator "Are you serious? get a real question." in response to an audience-provided query about education funding.
If you are feeling over-burdened with turkee, and have already given to the dKos 12, Dean Dozen, and Kerry, consider supporting a Kossack vs an arrogant burro.
FYI, latest Polling (MOE 7%) Esquivel 35%, Undecided 34%, Doty 29%, NR 2%
