Bushies in Streetsboro, Ohio have found a great way to stop Democrat Brett McClafferty from becoming their mayor: outlaw it.
McClafferty, 19, came within one vote of making the runoff. The current "leadership" of the city became so alarmed by this challenge, they are now working to ban anyone younger than 23 from running for the office of mayor.
The will of the people is clearly not important to the bushies. They give higher priority to reserving political office for the "right kind of people," regardless of whom the voters want. Hey, what do voters know?
Ohio Young Democrats and the ACLU are fighting this, and for good reason. In a democracy even young people deserve representation, and voters deserve the candidate of their choice.
The bushies are using prejudice to back their move, playing on stereotypes of youth as idiots who would cause disaster if elected. (Anyone who saw Birth of a Nation knows just the kind of disaster that can happen when you let "the wrong kind of people" run for office.)
In real life, of course, plenty of people younger than 23 have held public office without any disasters breakig out -- Michael Moore is just one example, though I'm sure the bushies do consider him a disaster.
