First, if you haven't already done so read up (such as KagroX's story yesterday) on the maneuverings in the vote on Dennis Kucinich's H. Res. 799 (previously submitted as H. Res. 333) calling for Cheney's impeachment. In a nutshell, the leadership wanted to kill the bill by tabling it. Oddly, though, it was kept alive by the combined votes of progressive Democrats and a large number of Republicans who apparently think that keeping the issue of Cheney's crimes in the forefront will somehow be a political loser for the Dems.
While we should give love to our Dem Congressmen who voted against tabling the motion, as suggested in other diaries, I think it's even more important to let our Republican Congressmen know how you feel.
If you have a Republican Congressman who voted against tabling the motion (i.e., for keeping it alive), write and let him or her know how much you approve of this vote. While we know the R's voted this way for cynical political purposes, treat the vote at its face value. Let your congresscritter know how this vote reflects the broad support of the public. I'm also thanking mine for at last taking my advice in a letter I wrote to him 12/29/05 in support of impeachment.
This action I'm sure will leave the R's scratching their heads on how their consituents could have misconstrued their vote. They can hardly respond that their vote was mere political posturing and they didn't really mean to vote that way. Moreover, future votes against impeachment would then be open up to charges of flip-flopping. Finally, it doesn't hurt to hear unexpected (and I'm hoping significant) constituent support on a what would otherwise be a neglected procedural vote.
As for those Dems who tried to kill the bill, I'm not sure what to say, other than I don't see a whole lot of difference between Steny Hoyer and Tom Delay.
