Naked Girls and Beer!

Sorry for the title, but I posted a diary about this yesterday, only to see it flushed down the drain.

Blogging For Michigan has started a troop care drive.  Led by fellow Kossack and owner of Blogging For Michigan Christine Barry, with the help of GM/UAW Local 598, Shiawassee County Commissioner Jack Johnson, and others, we are asking for your donations for our fundraising efforts.  Every penny you donate will be used to send food, clothing, DVDs, and bathroom items to troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.  We're doing this to coincide with the holiday season, as this is a hard time of year for our troops to be deployed.  Every penny that is donated is going towards either buying things for the troops or for postage.

So please, donate!

      It is a very sad and touching diary. This guy is in a world of hurt. But that can't make me look past this:

        The Iraq war was a mistake, and a huge one.  I was wholesale against it since before George W. Bush could point out Iraq on a map.  But it is not the greatest crime against humanity in the last 50 years.  Not even close.  If it was, I wouldn't be sitting here in my living room on a computer, writing about it.

            Poorly phrased on my part.  My point is that I feel that the answer to the Iraq war is political.  I doubt I would feel the same way if my country was truly perpetrating the greatest crime against humanity in the past 50 years.

              overly accusatory, but i think you are mistaken about that. it is very difficult for ordinary citizens to imagine that their own government is responsible for heinous crimes in far away countries. (consider the sanctions program against Iraq, under Bush I and Clinton, which apparently resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands -- if not millions -- of Iraqi children. consider the crimes against immigrant workers in the marianas. consider guatemala. consider nicaragua. consider el salvador.) unfortunately, this tendency enables dire crimes against humanity -- including the war in Iraq, whose ultimate toll may number in the tens of millions, if it results, as it seems to be doing, in the complete destabilization of the middle east.

              it is almost impossible to get the typical citizen to accept that George W. Bush is a sociopath -- that the only thing that limits the scope of his crimes is the inertia of the US Constitution. if i compare Bush to Hitler, i get a lot of angry responses from people asking me, where are the concentration camps, and telling me, look if Bush were like Hitler, we wouldn't have the freedom to compare Bush to Hitler. but all this demonstrates to me is that the US Constitution, being about 15 times older than the Weimar Republic, is a more substantial barrier. this neither excuses Bush, nor excuses optimism with respect to his butcherful character.

    ...and a lifetime of nightmares to show for it.  Horrible accidents happen in the fog of war, and those at the front lines are the ones who have to live with the outcomes of those horrible accidents, even though the wars are not of their making.  A wartime accident is a poor reason not to support troops.

  can be hungry for Ramen noodles when Halliburton et al are providing food service almost 24/7?  Then there all the fast food restaurants on the larger bases which is where most of the troops are stationed.  Plus PXs.

  The Halliburton built and serviced camp in Kosovo almost sounds like a resort.

      ask a solicitor of donations about the need and what the funds will be used for?

      There are many worthy causes and most of us have to prioritize our giving because we don't have unlimited discretionary income.  Therefore, some of us prefer to get as much information as possible before donating.

      I have no illusions that serving in Iraq is a picnic and do understand that there are some rudimentary outposts where the conditions are rough.  However, from all the information I've managed to read, most of the troops today seem not to lack food and other basics.  The same can't be said for a large percentage of Iraqis.  So, again, please tell more about what the troops need and why.
