The Undecided Voters???

Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 09:51:46 AM PDT

It seems a bit unethical to me to report that within some margin of error, someone has a lead while 76% of the voters are uncommitted.  It's good to see the margin of undecideds reflected in this new Boston Globe/Univ. of NH poll but it is hard to find clear margins of undecideds in other polls. Does anyone have better numbers/links to undecided voters in various states?

POLL: 76% of NH Democratic Voters Still Undecided

Barack Obama benefits the most by meeting and talking with people in the early primary states because Edwards and Hillary are more known quantities.  However, many of the undecideds are basing their decision on wanting to back a winner and who can win the general election.  Leaving out the large number of undecideds in the MSM clearly helps the leader (Hillary).  However, among the top tier candidates from both parties, in the general election, Obama has the largest field of potential voters:

Zogby Poll: Whom would you NEVER vote for for President of the U.S.?

Obama     Edwards     Clinton
 37%         42%           50%

POLL: 76% of NH Democratic Voters Are Still Undecided
This Boston Globe/UNH poll (11/7) shows 76% of New Hampshire Democratic voters are still uncommitted to a primary candidate. Only 24% of Democrats have "definitely decided" 28% are leaning and 48% have no idea.  That's 76% undecided.

~57% of Iowa Democratic Voters Are Still Undecided

This is the best I could find from a University of Iowa poll from last week.  It is the closest thing to showing info on undecideds in Iowa I could find.

Univ. of Iowa Poll:    10/17-24/07    (306 LV)

Clinton     Obama        Edwards
 29%          27%          20%

"How likely is it that you might change your mind and end up caucusing for a different candidate than the one you support now?"

SOMEWHAT LIKELY   49.6%
VERY LIKELY        7.9%
-------------------------------
Total undecided = ~57.5%

For comparison:

Zogby Iowa Poll: 11/6/2007 (502 LV)

Clinton     Obama        Edwards
 28%          25%          21%

~63-30% of South Carolina Democratic Voters Are Still Undecided

AARP poll shows (SC) voters still undecided (63%)

  •  It is interesting-----I've (0+ / 0-)

seen numbers all over the place on the undecideds.  I think it's definately something to keep in mind while reading polls----whichever way these undecideds swing at the last minute is going to be the story.
And speaking of polls----anyone know why icebergslim's diary today on the USA Today natl poll showing Obama/Clinton tied went poof!?---disappeared right before my eyes as I was getting ready to comment.

  •  Not only does the media neglect (0+ / 0-)

to report on undecideds; but the media decides who to campaign for. In this Pew research article, you can see that the press has covered Obama favorably by a WIDE margin over anyone else...

There's significantly better stuff to cover about Obama.  Yet, when you see and hear the pundits on every major news talk show they flog Hillary's inevitability without mentioning how many undecideds there are.

      •  you're kidding, right? (0+ / 0-)

why didn't the media cover all the great in depth policy proposals that Edwards offered right from day one? Why did they do nothing but cover stupide speeches full of rhetoric backed up by absolutely nothing?

        •  He flubbed the Haircut attack (0+ / 0-)

When he couldn't knock that one out of the park, the media wrote him off.  Even if he were to win Iowa don't expect a bump, the press would just point out that he should have done better since he's been running there for four years.

        •  Somebody's grumpy? (0+ / 0-)

I just got over the stomach flu and have a bad sinus infection and my medication is preventing me from responding appropriately.

        •  Edwards has apologized for most of his record (0+ / 0-)

John Edwards has apologized for most of what he did in the Senate, like voting for increased trade with China, Right to Work, Packer Ban, No Child Left Behind, Bankruptcy reform and the Iraq War.  After losing badly in the one debate with Dick Cheney in 2004, poor handling of the hair cut curfuffle, his 28,000-square-foot mansion, charging $55,000 for a speech on poverty and $16 million investment in a company foreclosing on Hurricane Katrina victims, many people just don't trust his judgment.

  •  Well, I am one of those (1+ / 0-)

who are firmly and completely undecided. I haven't moved one iota since the whole thing began. I don't hate anybody, but I don't really like anybody, either.

At this rate, it seems as if I'll be undecided until Election Day. One could argue, of course, that it doesn't really matter, since the whole thing will be decided by January, February the latest. Of course, the presidential candidates do want my money and I haven't given to anybody, nor am I likely to. Sorry.

I should add that this is in strong contrast with the last time around, when I was an early and ardent Clark supporter. This time? Eh, not so much. My lack of enthusiasm and apathy seems to have settled in for the long haul.

Good post, Todd, and good luck.
