Some good news, the immunity-free House version has passed 223-189.
Small Edit: Roll call on passage. Only 5 Dems voted against, only 5 Republicans voted for.
Of course, the Republicans tried their usual trick, with a motion to recommit.
Republicans offered a motion to recommitt promptly, with the intent of "effectively killing the measure by delay" as the Washington Post recently described such motions. Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers and Democrats denounced the measure the measure was defeated:
For fun, roll call on the motion to recommit. I think these votes are important to watch as they're a sneaky way for weak spined Democrats to oppose things while still appearing to support them, similar to the senate trick of voting for cloture but against a nominee who already has 50+ votes.
So this is no guarantee that the bill that reaches the President will not contain immunity as it could still get inserted in Conference, but it is a solid step forward. I would like to have seen an explicit statement rejecting immunity from Pelosi or a prominent Dem House chairperson, because that would indicate some spine by House Dems to resist a conference version of the bill including immunity.
Nonetheless, good news is good news, even if it will rain tomorrow, it is sunny right now.
