I was lucky to be in Des Moines for the JJ dinner this weekend and did a little informal polling myself.
I was impressed with the political acumen of everyone I met in Iowa. On the whole, they take their job as the first state very seriously and try to find out all they can about every candidate. I am not a shy person, and love finding out what people are thinking, so I talk to almost everybody.
This is not scientific, but I had separate, random conversations with two older, white male, gun-toting Republicans whose first choice for president is Obama! Over either Romney or Giuliani. But they both said that Clinton will never be president. I asked them to please caucus for Obama, but they wouldn't go that far. Sigh.
So the question is:
Will we Democrats shoot ourselves in the foot by nominating someone "they" think is electable (Clinton)?
Or will we do ourselves, the country, and the world a great good, and nominate someone who appeals to voters across party lines?
