Many southwest Native American Tribes particularly of Athabascan descent, had powerful spiritual ties with Earth Mother. My grandfather taught me of his medicine, and I carry his words and his yellow eyes.
This is the first in a series of diaries that will be reviewing news of the ecological disasters unfolding upon Earth Mother, how we humans are affected by it, how ancient Native American teachings may be relevant in this time of excess, and what we can do to politically make our voice heard when no politician wants to make these issues their tentpole.
We'll start after the break.
The Hopi have some very interesting stories in their tradition. One of these stories revolves around creation, and the bearers of the elements.
In ancient times, the Hopi had a story that outlined the colors of the races of humans, what their roles designated by the creator are.
Each race had a representative element.
The Brown Race are of the Water. It is their job to keep the water pure.
The Yellow Race are of the Air. It is their job to keep the skies clear.
The Pink Race are of Fire(technology). They are to use flame.
The Red race were of the earth. We are to keep the earth whole.
These stories are ancient beyond any known contact with the other races mentioned. Their story goes on.
According to the Hopi legend each race would be given a set of stones by the creator outlining their way of life. It would directly set out the black(correct) path for them, and would in turn outline the red(incorrect) path. One of the races would cast these stones to the ground and "would make it hard for the other races to live".
I am not one to suggest that any one race is evil. Please understand that this story is not one of division, and bear with me.
We have in the bible a reference to one of the races casting their stones to the ground. That race is the race of fire.
Fire is used to forge instruments of all sorts. Instruments of medicine, instruments of war, Instruments that farm the land.
Fire is not in and of itself bad, nor those who wield it.
Technology allows us amazing abilities in this modern age.
The power to learn, the power to heal, the power to destroy.
We live as gods. Gaining knowledge (and therfore freedom) at a staggering pace.
Science gives us the abundant life.
Technology brings us magic.
Yet we ignore it in this age. We follow the men of mystery. Much like the ancient priest through whom salvation could be delivered. We use technology so that we DO NOT see the gears in motion.
In this age of reason, we reach for madness, and it pays us in kind.
We must request that those who lead and represent us acknowledge the changing environment. The Earth Mother cares little about us, for you see, life will continue.
We cannot destroy the earth, only our place in it.
I, this very day will only consider any candidate that will enforce environmental policies over power grabs.
Carbon Caps above War.
Trees more than bullets.
A candidate that will gain my vote will value all life, not just born or unborn. They will recognize that all life is sacred, and we must acknowledge that our fellow lifeforms are alive.
A candidate that will garner my trust will acknowledge that we are only part of this life called Earth.
