In SurveyUSA’s third poll of New Mexico’s 2008 Senate contest, Tom Udall reasserts himself at the front of the pack! The first survey, released on October 8, showed Udall hammering both Steve Pearce and Heather Wilson with considerable double digit margins even though he had not yet decided to enter the race. Udall was not polled in the second SurveyUSA match-up released November 5.
The third SurveyUSA poll was sponsored by KOB-TV and was released this morning. The data, collected between 11/16 - 11/18, shows Udall trouncing the competition following a successful Draft Udall movement that culminated with Udall’s announcement he was planning to run for the Senate seat. Consistent with other polls on the race (including Udall’s own internal numbers and a Research 2000 poll commissioned by DailyKos), today’s data shows Congressman Tom Udall stomping Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez in the primary race for the Democratic nomination.
With 180 days until early voting in New Mexico begins, here are the numbers:
Tom Udall beats Martin Chavez in the Primary: 62%-32%
Udall and Chavez are tied among New Mexico Hispanics but leads by 54 points among white Democrats
In the General Election, Democrat Tom Udall easily beats either Republican while Chavez loses to Republican Pearce and ties with Republican Wilson.
Udall today defeats Wilson by 15 points.
Pearce today defeats Chavez by 10 points.
Wilson and Chavez today tie, 47% for Wilson, 46% for Chavez.
Interestingly, when breaking down the female vote Udall gets 59% against Pearce and earns 61% against female Republican Congresswoman Heather Wilson! More from the SurveyUSA poll:
When Pearce is pitted against Udall, whites split. But Udall wins 2:1 among Hispanics. When Wilson is pitted against Udall, whites split. But Udall wins 7:3 among Hispanics. With Udall on the ballot, Moderates break 2:1 Democrat. With Chavez on the ballot against Pearce, Moderates split. With Chavez on the ballet against Wilson, Moderates break 5:4 Democrat.
