Over at Blogging For Michigan, we’ve spent the last 2 weeks raising money for troops that are deployed overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. The goal is to get $350 for each group we are supporting to create and ship care packages to in time for the holidays. As of right now, we have about $3,400 raised, due largely in part by UAW Local 598, and a few donations from bloggers. The money, when divided amongst our 12 groups makes about $283.
We are $804 short of our goal, and since we are donating to 12 different groups courtesy of anysoldier.com, that comes out to about $67 per group.
We’re asking that you at DailyKos, help to be the dozen donors that are going to put us over the top. 100% of every donation you give us will be used to buy and ship things like food, toiletries, and entertainment items to troops that are deployed overseas. There is nothing going towards paying staff as we’re all volunteers in this effort, so every penny is going towards buying and shipping items to the troops.
Christine Barry, fellow Kossack and founder of Blogging For Michigan, explains how the fundraiser works:
- We beg you for money. Seriously. We're not proud.
- You give us money, because you hate to see us beg.
- We get a big shopping list from anysoldier.com.
- We shop, pack, and ship to our troops.
- Our troops get a little happiness for the holidays.
As an OIF/OEF veteran myself, I know how much it sucks to be away from home during the holidays. I also know much of a morale booster it is to receive care packages with items that make your day a little brighter.
We as Kossacks know that it isn’t enough to just say you support the troops. It’s not enough to put a yellow magnet on a bumper and promptly forget about those who serve our country. We know it requires action. I’m asking that you take that action now and donate. Our fundraiser ends tomorrow. Please help us to reach our goal.
