Edwards Launches New Television Ads In Iowa And South Carolina

Today, Senator John Edwards goes up on the air with two new television spots which detail why he is the one candidate the American people can trust to take on the corrupt system in Washington and stand up and fight for America’s working families.

In "Born," which begins airing today in South Carolina, Edwards talks about his experience growing up in a working-class family in rural Carolina mill towns. "When the mills closed, I saw first hand how devastating bad government and corporate greed can be," says Edwards. "I’m running for president to do what I’ve always done – fight for people like the ones I grew up with against the powerful forces that have corrupted Washington." Edwards was the first Democratic candidate to go up on the air with television ads in South Carolina earlier this month, and this is his third new spot in the state.

Today in Iowa, Edwards will begin airing "Mess," which focuses on his belief that ensuring our children have a better life is the great moral test of our generation. "We’re going to have to be willing to take on this corrupt system and change it," says Edwards. "And if we’re not going to do it, we’re going to have to be willing to look our children in the eye and say we’re going to leave this mess for you."

2. Edwards Officially Kicks Off "America Belongs To Us" Week

This week, Senator John Edwards kicks off "America Belongs to Us" week, highlighting why he is the one candidate the American people can trust to stand up to the big corporations who have used their money and lobbyists to rig the system in Washington for their own benefit at the expense of hardworking American families.

...

"Twenty generations before us have ensured they left a better life for their children, but there's a very real risk that we could be the first generation to fail to do the same," said Edwards. "Making sure we do not fail is the great moral test of our generation. And it's not going to be easy."

Edwards continued: "I am certain we can do it. But it's up to you to choose what we need to do it – all I can do is tell you what I will do. I will not play by the Washington establishment's rules, because I believe they have twisted the rules beyond recognition and rigged the system to benefit the few at the expense of the many. I will not compromise with the people who are powerful in Washington – big oil, big insurance companies and big pharmaceutical companies – because I do not believe they will ever compromise their profits or their power.

"I will tell you the truth, the hard truth, the whole truth. I will fight for you like I have fought for people like you my entire life. And together, we are going to win."

3. Edwards Announces Plan To Take On Health Insurance Companies To Help Families

"The American health care system is broken," said Edwards. "Even families with insurance are often unprotected from catastrophic events, as insurers fight legitimate claims, impose coverage caps, and look for technicalities to cancel policies. Half of families entering bankruptcy today are driven by high medical costs.

"I have spent my entire life battling special interest groups to protect the rights of regular Americans. In courtrooms, I stood with families who needed a voice against armies of insurance company lawyers. In the Senate, I championed the Patients' Bill of Rights to fight managed care and insurance company abuses. I've seen first-hand how far too often health insurance companies will put profit and executive bonuses above the medical needs of their customers.

"Last week, Governor Romney proposed even further deregulation of the health insurance industry – a plan that could lead to even more insured Americans without the care they need. This is clearly the wrong approach. We need tough new insurance laws to prevent abuses and ensure that Americans are no longer on their own against insurance companies."
