FAQ Forum: Got DKos questions? We've got answers

In the discussion last night about suggestions for the FAQ, one request that was brought up was a place for new folks to ask dKos-related questions of all sorts, and get them answered.

I'm willing to give it a shot and see how things go. So...

Ask your questions, and I'll try to answer. Hopefully, other veterans will show up and answer things as well.

If people think this is a good idea, it's probably worth doing as a weekly series. I can at least get things started, but I think ultimately it would work best as a collective series. The title comes from roughly 10 seconds thought after a long day of staring through a microscope, so alternate suggestions would be appreciated.

  •  You need to explicitly put in the HTML code

    So, let's say you want to link to the DK home page in your sig.

    In the signature box on your user profile, you'd type <a href="http://www.dailykos.com">Daily Kos</a> to get Daily Kos.

      and then you can use http://tinyurl.com/ to make a much reduced version of the URL, which might fit.

          Will DKos 4.0:

          a) not count the characters necessary to set up a link as part of the 1130 characters allowed in the intro to a diary?; and

          b) have real-time error messages for HTML errors - or at least highlight the errors once you try to publish - so that we don't have to go on a treasure hunt every time we publish a diary that contains HTML errors? Pretty pleeeezzz??

        It can mask malicious sites from unsuspecting users.  Not that we'd ever have that problem here.. but out in the "real world" beware of tinyurls.

        the 'link' button and then see if a paste in the sig line window on your user page will make it work. Chances are the URL is too long. Try something short as a test.

          it gets turned on when the site is really busy and ct has to turn ajax commenting off.  In those occasions, you rate all the comments you want and then hit the "rate all" to submit all the ratings at once.

  •  That's a holdover

    of the old comment/diary system, which didn't update live the way the new system does, but instead required you to refresh the page to see new comments, etc. Sometimes when you load a diary, there's some problem with the magic that makes the new system work, and the site falls back to the old ways. Normally, you shouldn't see that Rate All button at all.

•  OK, here's one

  Why is it that when some diaries get deleted, your comments also vanish into the ether, but other times when diaries get deleted, your comments remain accessible through your recent comments page? Both of these cases happened yesterday, one with the diary on the crappy Zogby Interactive poll, the other with the diary about Hillary's camp paying bloggers for comments.

  (I assume both these diaries were pulled by their authors, but the structural difference may be that the blogging-for-dollars one was by Adam B, so I'm wondering if deletion by someone with keys to the front page causes deletion of the subsequent comments, while deletion of a diary by a member of the peanut gallery leaves the comments intact.) (Although now I'm remembering back when Delaware Dem accidentally deleted a Roll Call and my comments were vanquished, so that probably shoots that theory to hell.)

    I don't know. I think by default your comments remain even once a diary is deleted. Dunno if there's any difference with a front-page story or such.

      I deleted one of my diaries a year ago. My comments on that diary cannot be retrieved by using the \http://www.dailykos.com/comments/sid..../1#c1 format. (I had saved a copy of the diary without comments, but with the URL).

      There was a diary that was a bit too personal and was pulled by the author, but I noticed that when you checked the previous tags that remained around you could determine who that author was.

      I pointed this out and the admins wiped it clean, 100% gone, comments, tags, all.

        but I can't swear to it. I have seen a diary deleted by an admin and all of my comments were wiped. But when the diarist deletes the comments stay.

    I think the clue is in the available links on each diary page.

    For instance, this story/diary is: http://www.dailykos.com/...

    and this comment is:
    http://www.dailykos.com/...

    Note that the story/diary structure is identical to the comments diary structure except for the top tier directory name ("story" vs "comments"). And '10#c10' is a subdirectory (and bookmark) under the mirror comments directory structure.

    I think what happens is that when a diary gets deleted the mirror comments directory structure gets deleted as well.

    It doesn't have to happen that way. But it was a software decision to do so.

    I can't tell you how many comments that I've slaved over to perfect for a half-an-hour or more have gotten deleted this way. These days my comments are less interesting and less of a well-constructed argument than they were when I first got here since I'l be damned if something I worked for an hour on is deleted 10 minutes after I'm done.

    It's my opinion that this is a flaw with the Comments section.

  •  Table formatting is generally deprecated in favor

    of div and span tags. But that's HTML, not dKos (I use tables anyway because they've worked pretty well for tabular data).

  •  It's in the FAQ

    buried many paragraphs down, but here's all you need to know:

    {table border=1} to start with.
    {tr} at the beginning of each new row.
    {td} before each cell.
    {/td} after each cell.
    {/tr} at the end of each row.
    {/table} at the end of the table

    Of course, change the squiggly brackets to the pointy brackets; I used the squiggly brackets so I didn't just generate a table in my comment.

      But for some reason when you put that in a diary it generates really goofy spacing between the last part of your paragraphs and the beginning of the table.

        I sent in a report a while back, and ct was looking into it. For some reason, the parser adds a bunch of line-break tags to tables, which then show up as a bunch of white space before the table.

          Speaking of unresolved, the auto formatting went away where you could use an asterisk to generate bullets.  I miss that...

        between the lines of HTML, if I remember correctly. So format it as you would a regular table in HTML, then string it all together with no breaks between the lines of code.

        since he does tables every day.  I think you can't have line breaks within cells, but cannot now recall the tricks he has mentioned.  Still if I needed to research, I would search his comments.

      in your comments.  If you use the escape character which is \ prior to the code you want to "escape" using, you can see the actual code.

      For the opening bracket: Type an ampersand (capital 7, thus: &, then type lt (stands for "less than sign", and type a semicolon ;.

      The closing tag is the same, except it's "gt ('greater than').

    for submission to Top Comments!

    You click the time stamp on the comment (for example, on yours that = Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 08:39:30 PM EST, it says EST for me, maybe not for you...).

    That will give you the URL for that comment specifically.

      the address bar of the browser window or tab that the comment opens in. You can copy it from there.

        For most browsers/OSs, that brings up a menu that will include "Copy link to clipboard" or something similar, and then you can paste it into your own comment, a text file, or whatever.

  ...BUT.. I am on other discussion boards, and I've never seen "n/t" on any of them.  I'm pretty savvy with computer lingo, but this one stumps me.
