The Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change officially takes effect this coming Wednesday, February 16: three months after Russia announced to the United Nations that it had ratified the agreement.
We all know that the United States continues to look backward, not forward, on its energy and environmental agenda. It will take some time for the U.S. to embrace guidelines that are as strong as Kyoto (which, in truth, are really not nearly as stringent as its opponents often claim), but one way for us to mark the beginning of this new era in climate protection is to pass the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act. Mark the occasion by sending Washington representatives this letter from the Union of Concerned Scientists asking for their sponsorship of this first step for the U.S. economy:
