Call Conyers, E-mail Conyers, Write Conyers

Tue Nov 06, 2007 at 02:02:45 PM PDT

Let John Conyers, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, know that we mean business about the Kucinich Resolution  to Impeach Dick Cheney.  Let him know in no uncertain terms.  The Democratic leadership thinks that by sending it to committee that they have effectively killed the bill.

Demand action!
Demand that the resolution receive the immediate attention that it deserves.
Why would the Democratic leadership even begin to listen to progressive Dems?
Because we must threaten to leave the party.
Not in 2010 or 2009 - next year - in 2008.

A 10% drop in Dem votes would spell electoral disaster for the party.

They know it.
We know it.
Let's let them know that we know that they know.

I want to vote a straight Dem ticket next year.
But I must have some reason to believe that it means change.

No funding for the Senate Campaign Committee.

An this issue is not dead. It is not time to dump on the National Democratic oinfratructure, but to organize locally to defeat the big money issues and candidates that they foist on us before we get to vote.

Practice real democracy and really organize well in your own neighborhood and we will get what we want.

Tell your own story about why this was a victory. If you tried at all to mobilize public support for impeachment on this specific day, you have won something.

You raised the profile of the issue.

You demonstrated you were a reliable predictor of newsworthy events in Washington, D.C.

You started to change the world and put the House on notice that war with Iran is desperately unpopular, and that there will be accountability for those in either party that launched us into Iraq for profit and pride.

There is a neat persuasion precedent that we need to use on the other side.

Now that the GOP Reps have voted for impeachment once or twice, it may not be so hard to get them to vote for impeachment again!

We need to reach out and tactfully thank the GOP reps on the Judiciary Committee for their support in holding Dick Cheney accountable for his crimes, for their defense of democracy and process in the House itself, ask for their help in bringing it to the floor again for debate.

And we need to bring impeachment to Iowa. Lets try to get Steve King, R, IA-5, on board and raise the profile of impeachment in Western Iowa in very patriotic terms, quoting his vote for specific parts of the resolution about how Cheney endangered US National Security.

Cannot put even ONE degree of heat on the administration,
Despite all the egregious violations of the Constitution, or international law, of basic decency,
Not to mention bankrupting the country - -

Then they don't deserve my vote.

I'm not saying that they have to impeach and convict.
I'm not even saying that they have to vote articles of impeachment.
(Although a simple majority can do so in the House)
But they must start the process.

When I expressed dismay with Speaker Pelosi's leadership and asserted that, in my opinion, she had castrated the Democratic party by taking impeachment off the table, Congressman Conyers said "well, maybe we should get new leadership." As we were leaving the meeting room, on our way to a filming for BET, we were again discussing bringing forward H Res 333 and the Congressman turned to me and said, "I really want you to convince me to do this." Everybody...especially Michigan residents need to hammer Conyer's phones, faxes and email.

Peliosi. She told him to table the Impeachment in the committee.  I heard that on MSNBC.

It's possible he made her think he wouldn't impeach so that she wouldn't fight it going to his committee

if we pressure him. Congressman Conyers has been to our weekly protest twice, the last time just this past Saturday.  He says he will do it if we convince him we are behind him.  I can't tell you how many times we told him we have his back.  Please bombard his office with phone calls and faxes!  Take a look at this picture - I really think he  just needs some evidence of support.  (So sorry I couldn't make this pic smaller - I tried, really I did!)Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

... tell him what I told my rep this morning:

Time and time again, the White House has refused to turn over documentation required by House and Senate committees performing their Constitutionally-required oversight duties.  The only way Congress will ever obtain this information is in the context of an impeachment investigation, because in such a context, the White House can not legally employ the "executive privilege" or "national security" excuses they have repeatedly employed to date.

Until there is a live impeachment investigation in progress, Congress will never be able to get to the bottom of the many self-evident crimes of the Bush administration.

You must get this process started, right now, today.

Sent to Conyers, Pelosi, and Lowey just now:

The Bush Administration gives you no other recourse but Impeachment

    Chairman Conyers;

Today, Representative Kucinich gave you a huge gift, an enormous opportunity to break the Bush Administration's blockade that keeps you from doing effectively your Constitutionally-mandated oversight duty.

It is now up to you to accept this gift, to grasp this opportunity, and to run with it.

I'm talking about H. Res. 333, read twice today into the Congressional Record and referred back to your Judiciary Committee, where it has been languishing unattended since April.

Impeachment is your only hope to obtain the documents hitherto denied you by the Bush administration.

Mr. Chairman, if you ever want to be able to say that you did your duty in a time of crisis, you must get the impeachment process started, right now, today.  Remember, impeachment is not a crisis of government;  it is the Founders' prescribed cure for a crisis of government.

Put the FISA revision aside.  Better we should revert to the 1979 law (as amended by the execrable P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act) than pass the amnesty-laden legislation that would be the only bill acceptable to the President.  Any decent, meaningful legislation you pass now will only be vetoed by the petty dictator in the White House.  It all can wait.

We have more urgent matters -- like the survival of our Constitution -- to address.

An impeachment investigation, and the hearings integral to it, is your only remaining means to getting answers from the Bush administration to the hundreds of hitherto-unanswered questions you have asked.

Do not pass by this window of opportunity.
