After the Supreme Court blocked executions nationwide in 1972, Florida was the 1st to draft a new state law. It was declared constitutional in 1976. The following year, Gov. Reubin Askew signed Spenkelink's 1st black-bordered death warrant, but hi s execution was stayed by courts. Twenty months later, Graham would sign the warrant that ended Spenkelink's life. Demonstrators protested outside the governor's mansion, then filled the lobby of Graham's office the next day. [I was one of those demonstrators outside the mansion.  CG]

    . . . the difference between taking 3 minutes to read something and 3 minutes to listen to it.  If you can articulate why exactly three minutes reading is shorter than three minutes listening I will happy to take your advice.

        there are people that spend a lot of time writing detailed diaries that have lots of good information in them. They go on the list, then 15 of these drive-by dairies are posted and they slip away. It is not fair to those that follow the rules and put in a lot of work for this kind of stuff to take up space.

        If you don't like it, start your own site and make the rules what ever you like.

        spend an entire afternoon researching and writing a diary like this one.

        A "10 second to write up" diary that looks more like it should be a comment in the OpenThread comes along and sends the other diaries down the pike.

        It's incredibly frustrating...even when it's a diary I took an hour or so to write.

          . . . investment of my time.  

          At least two hours surfing the internet, gathering links and quotable material.  [Today's single link is very unusual.]

          An hour preparing an outline.

          Forty minutes recording the first raw audio.

          An hour editing the audio to get the long show down to 24 minutes.

          A half hour selecting, editing and mixing the three minute excerpt.  

          90 minutes of post production, including noise removal, compressing the audio wave, and mixing down to the mp3.

          That's six and a half hours, minimum.  

          The diary here giving you a link to my several hours of hard work doesn't take me very long.  

          In short, I put every bit as much effort into my podcast as you put into your written diary.

              Of the many diaries I have written, I wrote them all in wordpad, offsite.  Then I came here and took five minutes to put them up.  In the case of my podcast, I prepared it using recording and editing software, and then took five minutes to put it up here.  What is the difference.

              What is so magical about spending time researching and preparing a written post, as opposing to researching and preparing a spoken post?  Is an hour spent putting thoughts into written words really more valuable than an hour spent putting them into spoken words?

              This is not a "drive by" in the sense that I am quickly posting a bare link to SOMEBODY ELSE'S work.  Think links here are to MY work -- just as if I had written a diary.

                Look...you admitted to writing the diary to "pimp" (gads I hate that word for promoting work).

                But if you notice, most of the "diary plugs" are embedded within the OpenThread and places like that.

                If you care enough about your work to do it, then you ought to care enough about how it's presented to your audience. And that includes a bit more than a couple lines and a copied quote.

        Just like other people pimp their websites.  You know that whole "cross posted at" business.  Oh, and by the way I've seen plenty of You Tube videos that were the whole diary.  You had to watch the video.  If this was strictly a "type" medium, why do they allow You Tube videos to be embedded?

          Look, man, it is not that hard to write three solid paragraphs (which is the standard for a diary), hell, you nearly did it in responding to me.

          As for pimping your show, okay, do what you like, but at least make it conform to the rules, which as I said is not that hard.

          I know it seems picky but really all you are doing is making it harder on those that follow the rules. When you do that, why should anyone want to listen to your show?

    . . . in the category of those taking practical steps to address the problem.  I'm a big fan of South Park, but sometimes they don't quite get it right.  To the extent they lampoon people who put their money where their mouth is by actually buying cars that emit less CO2 and consume less energy, they are lampooning the wrong people.

      on stem-cell research was particular off and (to the extent one should take any of the show's political content seriously) completely misrepresented the issue in a way that's hard to excuse.  I like the show, but sometimes they're way off base (though those episodes are sometimes still funny).
