Smurf this CNN poll

Tue Nov 06, 2007 at 04:32:05 AM PDT

CNN is running a poll asking if illegal immigrants should be given driver's licences here. Currently the nos stand at 90%.

This is so idiotic, and obviously meant to slam Hillary.  If one of these Lou Dobbs acolytes were in a wreck with an illegal alien who didn't have insurance because he didn't have a driver's license, he would scream bloody murder.

  •  Yes the repubs have a solution. (8+ / 0-)

It is called the North American Union and the Trans Texas Highway. Repubs. are pretending that they will do something about illeagals and are using it as an election issue. Its all a game with them. And to anyone out there who tried to tell me Lou Dobbs was a bigot, and I defended him, I am sorry. He is a bigot and a right winger in disquise.

  •  I am a Lou Dobbs acolyte (5+ / 0-)

And I vote no.  An illegal should not, IMHO, have access to anything except life-saving emergency medicine.  And then, after the emergency is over, they should be sent to a hospital in the country they are legal in.  I don't care about their need to move around.  They shouldn't be moving around here, at all.

in my local newspaper with the question, "what makes anyone think that an illegal immigrant will buy car insurance?"

I live in New York, and I have to agree that many probably will not because they can't afford to, at least not here in New York.

Move to SoCal for a few years, and see the illegals doing the jobs that "nobody wants". You know, like honey wagon driver, carpet layer, carpenter, welder, cook, factory worker, etc, etc, etc.

In the financial world that is described as material. This is what the Republicans and anti immigrants don't get. It a situation summed up by the old line that if you owe the bank a million dollars you have a problem, if you owe the bank 200 million dollars the bank has a problem. It's a big and real problem that has to be addressed and building the great wall of Tancredo on the southern border aint the answer.

    •  I remember Ronald Reagan said tear down that wall (0+ / 0-)

Unfortunately, it wasn't about the wall that divided the US from her friendly neighbor to the south, Mexico.

  •  Its a non-scientific poll, so it's a moot point. (0+ / 0-)

Unless, you're concerned that people will take this poll for being valid and representative of the population of the US.

If that's the case, then we're really screwed, if we, the people of this country, can't see how this poll really amounts to nothing except it being another invalid talking point for the bloviating talking heads.

  •  Voted NO (0+ / 0-)

I also voted No.  Sorry to the poster.  Seriously, did you think that asking us to smurf this meant we'd all say YES?  This is not an easy issue nor one that is necessarily liberal/conservative or Dem/Rep.  If you sent a link to a "Is waterboarding torture?" poll then sure I think almost all kossacks would vote NO.  This sort of makes me curious to see how this Illegal license Q would go if posted on the dailykos frontpage.  I would guess the YES would get 60-70%,

Also, if it's meant to slam Hillary then that makes me like it even more.  Sorry, but this is political primary season and things are in full swing now.  It's about time the networks stopped drooling over the "inevitable" Hillary-Rudy matchup or whatever.  I wish Edwards and Obama were covered for their substance a lot more.  This license Q actually does have to do w/ a real issue though - one that is important to a lot of people.  Maybe not just specifically for the Q of licenses, which could be argued to be a safety issue (but how much safety improvement vs. negative consequences of illegals gaining more access to more things is the important Q), but for the related implications about how many benefits/privileges we will continue to allow when it seems like we're not focusing enough on cracking down on employers, borders, and deportations.
