I've seen it argued that impeachment wouldn't do any good unless the Democrats take back the House in 2006. Bull. Having Speaker of the House Hastert serve out the remainder of the term is what
should happen. The impeachment and trial should be as non-partisan as possible, to minimize the extent to which one impeachment leads to another.
Removing an administration for utterly disregarding democracy here at home should not be a partisan act. Republicans outside the administration, even those who were somewhat complicit, should be welcomed onto the bandwagon. The more people we have saying that what this administration aha dome is beyond the pale, the stronger our democracy will be in the future.
It's probable that impeachment and conviction are politically
impossible unless either the Democrats have taken control of the House or the atmosphere is such that they are very likely to, depending on whether we're talking before the election or after. And I'm not sure that making a big issue of it if it's not going to happen is a good idea. I just don't know. But if it can happen, it should. And it would be far better if it
doesn't entail a takeover by one party from the other.
