I watched the community event today in Iowa and I figured I would watch an event where the candidates will tell the crowd what they wanted to hear and to no surprise was not disappointed. This event reminded me why Democrats lose general elections. More on that in my next diary.
However, one thing stuck out to me. When the candidates were asked would they tackle immigration reform in their first 100 days of their Presidency, she didn't give the easy answer and say yes. Instead she said it would be a priority and also so said it depends on Congress. Of course she was booed for giving the right answer, but not the answer the crowd wanted to hear.
The new found respect comes about because to me that showed that Hillary understands where we are as country right now and also how Washington works, no matter who the President will be. Illegal immigration will be a huge issue in 2008 and it's not something to be played with by giving the easy answer to a partisan crowd. It is also ONE of many top issues facing this country. Her answer told me that Hillary Clinton is really serious about being a good President of US for all people. Let's face it, the issue of illegal immigration is not only toxic for Republicans, but for Democrats as well. I know so many Democrats who have switched to independent status b/c of this one issue.
One note to Obama...please stop it with the over the top rhetoric. The last question asked to him in the community event today that was asked of every candidate..."would you meet with community leaders in your first 100 days after taking office"...of course Obama had to go over the top and say "not only would I meet with them, but they will be part of my transition team". I mean give me a break dude, everyone else answer was yes of course, but Obama the crowd pleaser had to outdo everyone. I wish I was one of these voters who is looking to be inspired and uplifted by a political candidate, but I'm not. I understand the job of President is not a glamour job, but one that one must work hard at to be successful...and be competent. I repeat I will support Joe Biden until he says he is out of the race, but I must say that I'm impress with Hillary and she is my 2nd choice.
