The Tavern-on-the-Green scene from Ghostbusters has been running through my mind in 2007 with annoying frequency. Remember it?
LOUIS (Rick Moranis) runs from his apartment, chased by the terror dog.
LOUIS: "I’m going to bring this up at the next tenant’s meeting. There’s not supposed to be any pets in the building."
(Louis bangs on windows of the Tavern-on-the-Green)
"There’s gotta be in a way in. Somebody let me in!"
(Louis keeps screaming, then turns to face terror dog)
"Nice doggie. Cute little pooch. Maybe I got a Milk-Bone..."
Terror dog growls. LOUIS screams as he’s being taken down, at the window, by the terror dog.
Restaurant guests are quiet for a couple of seconds, then resume normal conversation.
Except in my updating, the Bush Administration is the terror dog, the Constitution is Louis, and the Congress and MSM are the Tavern-on-the-Green patrons.
Warrentless wiretapping. Noise, then Congress gives Bush a pass, and appears poised to not "fix it" as promised. The MSM moves on to Britney.
Politicizing U.S. attorneys. Noise, hearings, Gonzales eventually goes away, but not much else. More Britney.
Private citizens refuse to testify before Congress at the White House’s direction. Noise. Nothing. Still more Britney. Some Paris. Oh, and O.J.’s back.
Over and over and over again.
Keith Olbermann’s Special Comment last night about, as he put it, "the President’s cataclysmic deception about Iran" contained this self-effacing setup to his conclusion:
My comments, Mr. Bush, are often dismissed as simple repetitions of the phrase "George Bush has no business being president."
Is there a hint here that in a week or so, everyone will move on to something else?
Or could it be, at long last, that the lying, dissembling, warmongering, and absorption with their own power will finally catch up with everyone in this administration?
They knew Iran had dropped its nuclear weapons program and the malapropist-in-chief still said "World War III."
With a smirk!
Now we get it.
