By now, faithful readers of Daily Kos know all about Albuquerque, New Mexico Mayor Martin Chavez and his (thankfully) very short-lived campaign for Senate.
Well, now that he's gone back to being mayor, there's serious drama headed his way:
As Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez ponders his political future, his ex-wife said that she is seriously considering running for mayor [in 2009].
Margaret Aragon De Chavez said she is planning on forming an exploratory committee in the spring for a possible run for mayor.
She said it is something a lot of people have encouraged her to do.
Aragon De Chavez said her experiences as a school teacher, principal, real estate agent, and single mother would make her a strong candidate.
"If you want to be an effective leader, you've gotta have the ability not to waffle on issues. I also think you've got to have compassion to listen and if you feel that you've made the wrong choice, you need to admit it and say it needs to be reevaluated," she said.
Aragon De Chavez was reluctant to answer questions about a possible face-off with her ex-husband.
This would be a "who the hell cares except Albuquerque folks?" bit of news, except for a potential bit of legal drama. From an Albuquerque Tribune article a year ago:
The City Charter might limit the mayor to two consecutive terms, but Martin Chavez doesn't think that would stand up in court.
Chavez, who is serving his second consecutive term as mayor, said last week he might consider trying for a third term, or running for governor or the U.S. Senate.
[snip]
"The theory would apply to the mayor's term limits," he said.
Said Chavez, a lawyer himself, "It's almost Legal Analysis 101."
OK. He's tried the Senate thing. He talked about running for Governor before that. Now it's time for... what? He's still talking about challenging the term limit, a year after the Tribune article was published.
Sure, it's over a year away, but it's already pure, cheap entertainment.
That's local politics.
