        Without doubt, the most ferocious swinging pianist I've had the pleasure to witness in action. My personal anecdote is a treasure of mine:
        
        Oscar was in town (Portland) to play at the Mt. Hood Jazz Fesitval in '86. As a Bosendorfer artist, he came to a piano store for a free concert on the Bosendorfer Imperial recording grand. About 300 people showed up, crammed into the showroom. But Oscar was late. The store owner was getting nervous, it was mid-summer and steamin' hot inside with all the bodies. So I was persuaded to go up on the little stage to play until Oscar arrived. I thought perhaps I'd only play 10-15 minutes, but...he was way late, so I had to entertain these Peterson afficionados for over 30 minutes until I heard this murmur run thru the crowd. I looked up and --- there he was!! I quickly ended my piece, got up, shook his enormous hand & introduced him to the anxious crowd. He gave a spellbinding performance that I watched from the railing about 6 feet away. What a treat!!
        
        Thanks, Turkana, for the tribute to Oscar. He will be missed, but what a wealth of recording we have.

  What a musical giant Oscar Peterson was!
  
  Many many years ago my father almost non-chalantly told me that there were two people, two of the world's most talented piano virtuosos, I needed to see perform before I died. One was Ahmad Jamal and the other was Oscar Peterson. The night at the Blue Note back in 1990, I realized why. Mr. Peterson was in top form as was the rest of his trio, Herb Ellis and Ray Brown. Bobby Durham was on drums. In fact, they recorded that night's session and released it on a CD: Live at the Blue Note. The music and musicians were all so alive and joyful and piquant, it was truly a night to remember.

    isn't as "mainstream" as other kinds of music. He was still a God in the jazz world..... Many Canadians can't name on jazz artist except him and Diana Krall. I like Molly Johnson myself, although she is conisdered jazz/pop cross over.

        Turkana, it is a fitting tribute. With Oscar we heard mainstream standards-based virtuosic jazz playing brought to the peak of perfection. He set the bar intimidatingly high for anyone wishing to follow his path.
        Jazz in the present day faces a riddle similar to that of blues and rock, i.e. the giants are almost all gone and can future players ever hope to come close to their creative fire and uniqueness? How is it possible to approach the excitement at the creation of a new type of music? Where is this generation's Sergeant Pepper or Are you Experienced? Can anyone ever play alto as well as Charlie Parker? Can any young blueser hope to plumb the depths as did Muddy or Howlin Wolf? The answer, of course, is that they can't, not by playing Satin Doll or Round Midnight for the ten millionth time. It will have to be some new form at which we can only guess.

  I've been a fan a Peterson's music for well over twenty years, but I'll admit that until he was no longer with us, I didn't know that he was Canadian (which probably marks me as a typically self-centered American).
  
  Whether as a leader or accompanist, Peterson was incomparable and will be greatly missed, but through his recordings, part of him will live on in all of us.

    son of a train porter, raised in Montreal. His father worked the trains, but was also a musician who passed on his love of music to all his children. His sister was a gifted piano teacher who taught Oscar and several of the other leading Canadian jazz pianist when they were Children.
    
    He lived in Mississauga, a suburb of Toronto and loved fly fishing on a lake in Northern Ontario where my ex-wife's parents also had a cottage. the lake was and is still full of rainbow trout many of whose ancestors he once caught and I'm sure enjoyed.
    
    He was chancellor of York University in Toronto where he taught in the jazz program. I've seen amd heard many interviews on CBC radio and television. He will be missed both as an unparalleled musician, the true heir to Art Tatum, and as a wonderful human being.
    
    We have only just begun and none too soon.

The things that I love about Tatum are the things that most people probably ignore: They all look at the lightning runs and phrases, and I have to give him points on those, but it was his harmonic and rhythmic sense that got me.     Vladimir Horowitz had been impressed by Tatum, so he sat down and worked for weeks on a version of Tea for Two, and then invited Tatum over and performed it for him. Whereupon Tatum sat down and improvised his own version.
    
    It is easy to imagine why Tatum blew away the young Oscar Peterson. And it is unfortunate that more do not know the work of both geniuses.

Thanks for the clips. Oscar had it all. Blinding technique, deep harmony , and , as evidenced by the clip with Ella , great taste and elegance.
Pianists of all stripes stood in awe of him for good reason. I loved his playing . One of the true greats.

I was fortunate enough to see him once, at Avery Fischer Hall with Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass. I can scarcely believe it myself.
Remember he played through arthritis in his hands and, later, a stroke that weakened his left hand. An inspiration.
