BREAKING: Special Election in VA on Dec. 11!

Mon Dec 03, 2007 at 07:56:54 PM PDT

I'm very excited at the prospect of turning Ohio's 5th District blue on Dec. 11. We have a great candidate and a decidedly unfavorable enviornment for the GOP down in the Buckeye State. But, as a resident of Virginia's 1st Congressional District, I'm starting to feel a little bummed at the prospect of a wasted opportunity.

Phil Forgit is not only from a more populous area of the district than his opponent, Rob Wittman, but he's a decorated Iraq War veteran in an area of the state where the military is of huge importance to it's voters.

Even before Phil shipped off to Iraq with the Naval Special Warfare Unit, he was an up-and-coming political star here in Virginia. In 2003 he lost to Del. Melanie Rapp while receiveing 46% of the vote. To give you an idea of how tough that district is...in 2007, despite the rosy atmosphere for Dems in VA, Rapp ran unopposed.

Before his military service, it was Phil's role as an educator that made him well-known in the Williamsburg area. In fact, after he did arrive in Iraq, he learned he had won the prestigious Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence from the NEA. With the prize money he earned, he started ForgitFilms LLC. His plan? To return to Iraq, even as a member of Congress, and show a side of the country that most Americans are completely unfamiliar with. Iraq isn't just a blob on a map. It's not just a subject to sit around and argue over. It's a country of mothers & fathers, of sons & daughters, of real human beings with real problems too complex to be summed up in a 2 min. nightly news segment.

Phil Forgit knows how to make the situation in Iraq better because, unlike the chickenhawks running this country, he's actually spent more than a weekend in Iraq. He knows the people. He knows what we're doing wrong, and what we could be doing right. In 2006, the term "Fighting Dems" was all the rage. It was a symbol that the Democratic Party was starting to find its voice again. But there's still work to be done. And there's one more Fighting Dem still out there that's had enough.

From Raising Kaine:

I'm hearing that a poll taken at the start of the race indicated that, after biographies were compared, voters in the 1st CD supported Forgit over Wittman by a 45%-44% margin.

From MyDD:

The Ohio 5th isn't the only red district special election taking place next Tuesday. We're also fighting for VA-01, which, with a PVI of R+8.9, is slightly less red than OH-05 (Bush won the district with 60% in 2004.) Yet, unlike in OH-05, it doesn't look as though there's much investment from the DCCC here...yet.

From CQ Politics:

The vacant U.S. House seats in Ohio’s 5th District and Virginia’s 1st District — which had been represented by Republican incumbents until their deaths in recent months — will be filled in special elections on Dec. 11. Both of these districts typically have strong Republican leanings, so the most likely outcomes are GOP holds.

But there is at least a sliver of uncertainty that, in CQ Politics’ analysis, mitigates against applying Safe Republican ratings to each of these short-term contests. The national political environment — which turned sharply against President Bush and his Republican Party in the 2006 midterm elections — remains unsettled. Additionally, the special elections held in mid-December, as most residents of the two districts are focused heavily on their holiday preparations, make the relative success of the parties’ voter turnout efforts difficult to predict.

  •  Lowkell Will Be Along Shortly.... (6+ / 0-)

To give you some MAJOR love, I suspect!!

    :)

I agree with you. Ohio IS an exciting opportunity, but there is no reason that the Democrats can not shoot for TWO seats to pick up on 12/11.

I, for one, am going to hate life if we wake up on December 12th, after all the FP love in Ohio, and find TWO races where the GOP won by six points or less.

      Lowkell was doing.

As a Virginia guy, he is understandably frustrated to see that there have been no less than three FP'ed diaries today on Ohio-05, while the VA-01 special is being ignored on DKos.

I agree with his concern. It is hard to say that OH-05 is winnable, but VA-01 is out of reach. They had very similar numbers in 2004.

      •  VA-1 is full of exurban sprawl, though. OH-15 (1+ / 0-)

is rural. Big difference in how persuadable they are.

      •  No, nothing's out of reach when (6+ / 0-)

there's only 3% turnout or whatever it's going to be.  If we get our voters out, we win.  That's the deal in super low turnout elections.

        •  Support him or Forgit him? (0+ / 0-)

Oooh, there goes my TU again --

-- A brief moment of silence for LaFajita's fallen TU. If it died like a dog for no reason, would someone please inform me as to why?--

I would very much like to meet Mr. Forgit, because I have some questions concerning some troubling remarks he may have made.

He makes strong emphasis in his campaign statements about how he painted schools in Iraq. I'm wondering if he noticed whether the electricity was on, or if the water was running, or if the toilets flushed; and, if all these vital services were indeed working, why are people dying of cholera? Who are the Iraqi's calling out his unfortunate name? Are they his friends and supporters or are they his victims?

The reason I pose these questions is I've heard too many people tell me about how, after the monstrous crime we've committed, and continue to commit every day against the people of Iraq, we can slap some paint on schoolhouse rubble and somehow this makes us even, and that Mr Phil now feels he is entitled to be the next war apologist feeding at the trough of the defense establishment.

And don't even get me started on the Repuglican - they're the girls I never date anyway.

Cindy Sheehan swore that before she ever voted for another war supporter she'd cut off the hand she voted with. I'm with her on this. So give me a reason to pack my hand in ice and ship it to Mr. Forgit. If there be no reason, perhaps I should stay home on 12/11,  keep my hand attached to my body, and attached to the finger that I'll be shaking in the face of my next so-called Representative.

In the meantime, it looks like I'll devoting my energies in VA to the campaign of Dennis Kucinich, because my money and my vote follow my conscience. I would have it no other way.

I didn't even notice who wrote that diary, and frankly I could care less. The issue here is simply getting some help for a Democrat running in a special election on 12/11 in Virginia's 1st CD.  Period.

  •  VA-1 Special Election (6+ / 0-)

Hey! I'll be home just in time to vote. This is a district that is very hard for Democratic candidates to win in. Jo Ann Davis -- whose unfortunate death precipated this special election -- ran unopposed in 2004, and it seems to be a pattern that Democrats don't run in VA-1. Which means it will be almost impossible for one to win this time because the reflexive vote there is for Republicans, and a Democrat would only really have a good shot if he or she had time to get voters to see them as a person instead of a party. That said, there's always a chance, and the race should get some more blogtime. Thanks for publicizing it more.
