Top Comments: First Posts Edition

Tue Dec 04, 2007 at 07:12:52 PM PDT

The first night of Chanukah began at sundown this evening, and since I already covered beginnings last night, I started thinking instead about other firsts. Seeing Scout Finch's first post as a front-pager sent me on a hunt to see what such first posts have looked like.

The only problem with this idea is that it didn't come to me until an hour before publication time. You can see how far I ran with it over the flip.

I decided to do these in reverse chronological order, starting with the

Class of 2008
smintheus hasn't posted his first front-page diary yet. I'll be generous and assume he didn't know he'd be sabotaging this diary even before he started his duties. Actually, I want his name here so I can add the link later, even if no one other than me ever sees it in this diary. (The next morning: Okay, it's up. Let's start his entry again:)

smintheus: Bountiful Justice is a meaty background article on today's arguments before the Supreme Court on the right of Guantanamo detainees to appeal their detention.

Scout Finch: Giuliani steps down from Giuliani Partners, on a breaking news story about a corrupt Republican presidential candidate.

brownsox: OH-05: An upset in the making? More detail on a new Blue Majority candidate in a special election only eight days away. Urging action and donations.

Class of 2007
MissLaura: Big Government in Action, writing on the benefits of the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, an excellent but underfunded federal program that allows Americans below the poverty line to buy nutritious food at farmers' markets.

Devilstower: We Never Make Mestakes, on how the government arrested and tortured Brandon Mayfield, an Oregon attorney, as a suspect in the Madrid train bombings, despite being toldl by the Spanish government weeks before that Mayfield was not involved.

Kagro X: It's Reyes at Intel. After the weeks of speculation over who would get the chair of the powerful House Intelligence Committee (would it be Harman? Hastings? Someone else?), it turns out to be Silvestre Reyes. Announcement and background all in one.

BarbinMD: The 80% Solution, reporting on Bush Administration considering dropping attempts to reconcile with the Sunni 20% in Iraq.

Class of 2006
DarkSyde: Science Friday: A Cosmic Season's Greetings on a 1968 message from Apollo 8.

mcjoan: More Purple Fingers, to What End? On the day's Iraqi parliamentary elections. (15 December 2005)

SusanG: Stop Me If You've Heard This One about terrorism and the Sahara Desert.

georgia10: Mr. Bush, Your Coalition Is Shrinking—Italy's withdrawal from the "Coalition of the Willing" prosecuting the Iraq invasion prompts an examination of who's gone and who's going.

If I ever do this again, I hope I have time to delve back into the Classes of 2005, 2004, and 2003. Lots of good people, good bloggers, and, I'm sure, good first posts, whether called that year's Guest Blogger or Contributing Editor.

The first-night Chanukah candles have long since burnt low and gone out, so it must be time for the day's Top Comment nominations. Several arrived in the TopComments mailbox today, and you may see them here. If you saw any great comments that are not mentioned here, please tell us of them in your own comments below. The address of that mailbox:

TopComments AT gmail DOT com
(change " AT " to "@" and " DOT " to ".")

Anyone can submit deserving comments to our address—the direct link to a comment is available from that comment's date/time—as long as they arrive by 9:30pm Eastern Time. Please always include your Daily Kos user name in the body of your message, so we can credit you properly.

Timroff initially sent in a nomination, but had a subsequent inspiration:

On second thought, let’s just nominate the entire comment section from the Dear Leader Live Blog. [Editor's note: there were 475 comments at last count, so be sure your browser can handle the bounty.]

musing85 mailed a nomination link sans write-up, leaving your editor to follow his bliss:

When Trix requests a Smite button, condoleaser obliges, and in doing so makes a minor typo that has repercussions downthread. For example, musing85's setup, and then the original nomination link to a comment by the aforementioned condoleaser.

From kath25:

Bad Questionable-at-best idea, but great comments in the diary Should Dailykos become invite-only?:

rustydude, Bouwerie Boy, and JoeW ruminate on the topic.

InsultComicDog has a better idea than the Diary Smite button.

chumley the striking WGA writer goes on a power trip.

On a more serious note, Fury sums up the joys of participation at DailyKos.

va dare sent:

Got to love this comment by The Wonder Moron for the reference to "sweeping the elephant under the rug": Friend of mine who works at Central Bank of Korea.

kovie chides clammyc with Stop being such a wuss—some fun snark but ends with a question that had to be on the mind of anyone who saw Bush's press conference today. (Or could he be OFF his medication? How else to explain such batshit idiocy?)

From scubaval:

My first nomination, a comment by LA rupert, and because I laughed out loud at the audacity. From the MLDB's diary GWB: Liar in Chief.

From your humble diarist, sardonyx:

In Red Wind's diary Huckabee attributes surging poll numbers to 'divine providence' adennak asks what the attribution will be when Huckabee loses. DrillSgtK has an answer.

After Democratic Luntz's initial thought—in terrypinder's How to write a proper Scold Diary—that MissLaura was mean to him at YK07, he's reminded that it was Elise who set him straight done him wrong said those words. He responds in kind, and the conversation goes rapidly downhillthread from there. (Note: downthread has the better material, but you really have to start at the link for full effect.)

Dallasdoc comments on corporatists and corporatism.

busternjake gets it right:

Let's make sure we elect a Democrat.

And a late addition: kath25 recounts THE SCOUT FINCH STORY to celebrate SF's accession to the Front Page.
