We must take action to get our voice heard through the media. We have no real voice on cable news, for starters, so we should start there. Here's what I'm thinking --
We all know that Fox News Channel is an extended commercial for all things right wing. It has numerous opinion shows sponsored by right wing hosts, including Neill Cavuto, John Gibson, Britt Hume, and O'Reilly. Hannity has to take a minute or two each show to smack Alan Colmes down before he takes over and turns it into another hour of right wing propaganda. So it's totally and hopelessly one-sided. We all know that, no big surprise there.
Now let's take a look at MSNBC. Joe Scarborough has one of the most one-sided right-wing opinion shows on TV, and he is out there pushing the right-wing agenda like there is no tomorrow. We were all glad that Countdown covered the election controversy when nobody else would, but Keith Olbermann does not take any ideological stand one way or the other. And CNN doesn't really have opinion shows, either going left or right.
Who is the articulate progressive host who also has an hour each night on any Cable News Channel to provide a countervailing point of view to all of these right wing shows? Anybody? Anybody at all?
There are none! That's the bottom line - in the world of Cable news channels, there are numerous right wing opinion shows on the air at all hours. BUT - There is NOT ONE SINGLE PROGRESSIVE OPINION SHOW ON ANY CABLE NEWS CHANNEL. Not One!
I've written before about this, I'll try it again. We need to organize an ongoing "Sinclairizing" effort to target the sponsors on these cable networks, demanding an equal voice for the half of all Americans who favor the progressive point of view. We can't boycott 'em all at once, I would start with one show on one network. "Scarborough Country" seems to me to be the right place to start, since Fox is hopeless anyway. Plus Scarborough is a scummy liar and he makes me sick anyway, and his guest hosts, like Pat Buchanan, are no better. If you can stomach it, watch 15 minutes of this garbage and you'll see what I mean.
What say you? Can we do this? Can we start the movement here and now? I'm tired of bitching about the media, and writing letters has accomplished nothing to date. Saying we won't watch them doesn't really help either, because other people do, and that's the whole problem.
If you're with me, let me know, and we can start the revolution tonight!
