Obama 2002 TV interview on IWR

Thu Feb 22, 2007 at 09:27:53 PM PDT

How did an unknown Illinois legislator have so much better judgement than the more 'experienced' Washington pols who want us to trust them to know what they're doing now?

But a party that could lose, ever, to the opposition they faced and there ideas, with their ostensible priorities, obviously was not full of bright bulbs or good stewards of those priorities.

(I say this as very much a latecomer to the Obama bandwagon.)

By no stretch of the imagination is he an ideal candidate on the issues, or matching my own opinions. But that doesn't make him wrong, either, necessarily, as I and the American People generally can in fact be wrong....

    •  He said on the show that he would have voted with (7+ / 0-)

That answers a few questions for some folks.  We can put that to rest now.  Good judgment, great presidential candidate.

  •  He actually was not unequivocal... (0+ / 0-)

but talked about a straight up or down vote, and maybe he would have voted with Durbin, but why?  Just because he was Durbin?

So, what if Obama had seen more information and concluded Durbin was not right?

After all, in 2006, when Kerry-Feingold came up regarding withdrawal and Obama was IN the Senate, then Durbin was apparently not worth following along with.

Obama's after the fact comments of 11-02 can be used by either side.

He was against the war at the beginning.  If he makes a mistakes he owns up to it and corrects it.  I know our Country will be safe in his hands.

    Obama wrote this:

"I know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, that the Iraqi economy is in shambles, that the Iraqi military is a fraction of its former strength, and that in concert with the international community he can be contained until, in the way of all petty dictators, he falls away into the dustbin of history.

"I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda. I am not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars."

He parsed the key issues correctly long before they played out.  Amazing.

    •  No (0+ / 0-)

Anyone with a brain and a heart arrived at the same conclusions. It was not difficult to see through the shabby "evidence" being peddled by BushCo. Millions of people protested in the streets before (and after) this ill-conceived aggression. Obama shows here he has a heart and brain.

Among the 2008 candidates, Hillary is one that doesn't have one of these organs.

  •  Obama shows he is the true foreign policy hand (0+ / 0-)

among the candidates.  He understood the dynamics of this war before it happened, and made his position crystal clear.  It is now beyond his opponents' ability to twist or obfuscate it.  It is yet another example of his good judgement, and he is going to ride it all the way to the presidency in 2008.

If you are interested in restoring America's good name in the world, Obama's your man.  Restoring is too weak of a word though.  Maybe transforming, or transcending, or raising it to a new height of respect and goodwill.  Take a look at Obama's reception abroad.
