Media Porn

Fri Feb 09, 2007 at 03:21:55 PM PDT

When I turned on the television yesterday to get my daily ration of Tweety (Hardball), BowTie (Tucker), and TheBeard (The Situation Room) I was met with preemption. On a day when the prosecution rested in the Scooter Libby trial; another helicopter went down in Iraq; and 4 more soldiers died; I was preempted.

With what?

The death of Anna Nicole Smith. Evidently, the death of someone in our ridiculous pantheon of celebrity is more important. The Gods are angry... and bummed! We must pay penance and be subjected to endless nonsense about someone who did next to nothing but be white, buxom and blonde. Oh, right, and titillate our sensibilities. Or something like that.

(more on the flip - I always wanted to write that!)

Grrr.

This follows wall-to-wall coverage of the "diaper astronaut" and many more instances of, um, "women (sometimes men) behaving badly or getting killed or running off or whatever." Remember the runaway bride? The Aruba girl?

"Where The White Women At?" indeed.

But that isn't really it, actually.

It's the idea that our ostensible news organizations think we're such sheeple that we'll tune in because someone they put up on Mount Olympus did something "notable (notorious)."

Grr, again. It's porn. Not there's anything wrong with porn, per se, but I'm not reading the New York Times or watching CNN to get off. I'm reading/watching to be informed about, um, shit that matters.

So, here's my idea. An idea inspired by Chris Bowers BlogPac email onslaught to the Edwards campaign to keep the Amanda and Shakes.

Why can't we do that when we see our media run amok with stories that are, ultimately, trivial? Stories that distract us from reality. Stories that, frankly, are the equivalent of telling all of us, "Look! Over there! A shiny thing!"

I'm no web guru and I don't have the chops to set up a site that can mass email all the "news" outlets with our objection to wall-to-wall coverage of trivial things. But it seems to me that we ought to use these nifty new tools we've been blessed with here in the 21st Century to let them know that a great many of us think this kind of coverage is bullshit.

I'll bet you that those on the right would agree as well. Yes, these distractions keep their scandals off the front page. They do ours as well. Yes, these distractions keep their sandbag techniques from being talked about. But we're not so blameless that we don't have our own "players in the Great Game of Gotcha!"

If we can agree with them on Net Neutrality (as far as we do), then I would imagine we could also agree on this: Media Masturbatory Porn about things that DO NOT MATTER hurt us all.

So, two things:

a) Is this feasible? Can we build a mechanism whereby we can let all of these producers, editors and opinion makers know that there are large swaths of the public that would rather hear NEWS that affects them? And let them know immediately? Imagine a flood of emails... from both sides.

b) and, can we find common cause with our opponents on such a thing? Because, if we can, those producers who think feeding us endless amounts of celebrity bullshit might re-think a thing or two.

We are their audience, right?

Or have I just lost my tiny little mind?

I reserve the right to be spectacularly wrong. Sue me, I'm an optimist. And this is my second diary in, um, years.

  •  Real news (7+ / 0-)

costs money to find and prepare.

They do this crap because it's easy.

They're lazy and they don't care what happens to this country.

As far as the other side goes, real news would kill their party.

Money they get because a great many of watch and so take in the commercials they air.

Yes, we could go after the advertisers but I think it would be interesting to right to the source. Let them know that people from all stripes are tired of their "easy" news.

      Just saying.

Reality shows are the best thing that ever happened to the networks.  No writers to pay.  No actors to pay.  You pay them to call in and vote.

        Typing too fast.

But, why does it feel that we're ultimately content to let them air crap? I mean, we do bear some responsibility for watching, right? Can't we DO something? Or do we just let it be and complain about how "it's all crap?"

That's not a personal critique (I have no mojo or karma or whatever because I'd give out a bunch right now), but rather an honest question.

        •  All we can do (0+ / 0-)

Is beat the drum loudly and constantly until our fellow Americans get the beat.

It would take a considerable number of people to actually have a somewhat immediate impact on the networks and their broadcasting Newstainment.  Otherwise, it's just gonna have to be slow, tough slogging! Unfortunately.

  •  If Anna Nicole had not died the big news story... (0+ / 0-)

would be HAGGERT NOT GAY!  Unless some other white, blond woman was killed or kidnapped.  Nobody has fallen from a cruise ship lately have they?  And who is this Scooter guy?  Did he kill or kidnap a blond woman?

There is a numbness that sets in, understandable, because people are working their tails off in this economy to support the family or have 'the best of everything.'

A box of colorful, talking pictures is background, a diversion, low on the priority list to hammer away at.

They are busy, raising their kids and keeping them busy.  They are overwhelmed by the sheer amount of crap to worry about and be disgusted by.

        There's just a lot!

        •  So... (0+ / 0-)

An easy way to let the media know - via mass email - is beyond our simple click, point, shoot minds?

Seems to me that we've been able to affect change in other areas, but perhaps, we should just stick to complaining.

That's not a dig, for the record, just an observation.

BTW, more Anna Nicole on the Nightly News. Whheeee!

          •  It sounds like a dig (0+ / 0-)

            But here's what I mean...

Yes, email the media - now make it so that 12 million people do that in the Month of February - because that's the kind of 'force' required to get it done faster than the drum beating idea that you didn't like.

OK, what are you waiting for? Make it happen! It's just click, point and shoot. Easy, right?

            Kill your television.

            •  Groovy. (0+ / 0-)

I'll just sit here day and night and email a bunch of different media outlets. By the time I've emailed them enough for it to matter they will have found another stupid story to talk about all the time.

Thank you for your constructive comment. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a whole lot of emailing to do.

Becaue... one person can do it all!  Yeah me!

It seems terribly evident that you actually missed the point of my diary. Namely, that we find a way to use the tools we have at our disposal to something that allows our 12 million (your number) to to let the networks know they are fucking us over.

But, hey, you're right. We're all working hard... so who cares?

              •  It seems terribly evident (0+ / 0-)

that you either didn't understand me or prefer a fight and sarcasm to real discussion.

My first comment to you was not attacking you, excusing the masses or advocating a tool that doesn't exist.  I said 'beat the drum.'  That means keep talking to people and educating them as to why they should care about the way things are and take some sort of action. And I said it will take TIME!

My next comment was based on the belief you sincerely were asking about email. I was illustrating that you can, but you had better have a way to get a lot of people do it in a short period to make the change I thought you were seeking.

Whatever, sorry for intruding on the solitude of your diary, Bettster. It was just one person's contribution.

                •  Oy. (0+ / 0-)

More clarity in your first comment would have kept me from responding. Just saying.

And, unless I'm terribly mistaken, you took umbrage at my response... but, blah blah blah.

No fights or sarcasm unless warranted. That said, telling me people are tired and overworked is a little like telling me people eat and breathe. I do live in this world, for the record.

And I do think that unless we look just a wee bit beyond our own exhaustion we'll be content to complain. And complain. And complain.

                  And nothing changes.

                  Namaste.

...it's because people really DO want to listen to this tripe.  But what choice do they have?

I keep thinking about the end of "The Running Man". It's not about what the people want, it's about what television tries to tell people they want.

  •  Well... (0+ / 0-)

That's my point. Can't we use these new tools to let them know that there are a great many of us who do not fucking care?

That we'd like to hear, um, news?

There should be a quick way to say "get back to the real world!"
There is so much important information coming out right now, it is imperative that it not be drowned out.  We need hold their feet to the fire.  TV news seems more popular than print.  When they ignore major news stories in favor of this irrelevant nonsense, our country is damaged.  We need to let them know loudly!

    BettyPaigeisaBlonde = i love it! :)
you've written very eloquently and sassily about a topic I think about a lot as well. I always had a conspiracy hunch that the media brings out the big silly guns a la celebrity weddings, divorces and deaths, when real news gets too intense. And as a woman, it does seem like these stories always involve one of our damn-sel in distress sisters.

You know, a website that tracks all "media porn" stories and gives you easy access to fire off a volley of protest to the appropriate place.
