No kidding. OK, this is a short diary, but I thought I'd get this out there. The Federal Flag Code (36 USC 10), section 8, paragraph K, states, and I quote:
The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
You can read it here, here, here, or for more links, try google Flag Code.
Yessiree bob- right there in black and white, written directly into the federal statues, that you should burn the flag (when it is no longer suitable for display).
This issue isn't about flag burning, or dishonoring our fallen heros, or besmirching the United States, or anything like that. This is purely about surpressing dissent, and revoking free speech.
Worse yet, this very amendment is what really dishonors America's heros. They didn't die for a scrap of cloth. They died so that we may be free. And we're going to take the fruits of their sacrifice and just throw it away.
For everyone who does feel that burning the flag somehow dishonors America- the map is not the territory, the menu is not the meal, and the flag sure as heck isn't the country. Guantanamo dishonors our country, by lowering us to be in the same level as Hitler or Saddam- we're no longer different in kind, we're only different in number. Iraq dishonors our country for the same reason. But flag burning?
