CSPAN-2  - CONSERVATIVE COALITION ON PRESIDENTIAL POWER!

Tue Mar 20, 2007 at 10:25:18 AM PDT

Bruce Fein, former Deputy Attorney General under Reagan, et al. speaking up against the injustices and illegalities of BushCo!!  Let's talk in a bit...It sounds very interesting.  They are calling for Left, Center, Right to hold in check the Power of the Executive.  Man, could it be that they are looking at a future with the Dems in power and they need to strip it out now?!

has been outspoken about his dissatisfaction with the Bush administration for some time.  He is an ultraconservative jerk, but at least he has recognised and protested Bush's assaults on Civil Liberties.

is calling out Bushco. Is that necessarily a Conservative Coalition action? Or is he just realizing, as many paleocons have, that Bush II represents none of what they stood for?

Your diary isn't filling me in much.

  •  Rohrabacher (5+ / 0-)

Did anybody see Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) on C-SPAN last night excoriating the Bush administration and the Justice Department over the Ramos/Campion affair? His evisceration of the executive was literally jaw-dropping. He more or less called Bush out as a charlatan, saying something to the effect that all of the president's talk of Christian compassion is just a facade and that the executive's contempt of the Congress is utterly unacceptable. It was really an amazing display. Kudos to Rep. Rohrabacher for speaking his mind (right-winger though he is).

committed by this admin, Rohrbacher, Sessions, Hunter and their ilk are upset (and passionately) about illegal immigration. I've even heard calls for impeachment from this bunch. They have no problem with any of the dastardly deeds done to our freedoms and Constitution.

Barack Obama - I'll never see the threat of terrorism as a way to scare up votes, it's a threat that should rally this country against our common enemies

  •  Bruce Fein has spoken out before (7+ / 0-)

about the abuses of BushCo, he has been a "lone voice in the Republican wilderness" for at least a couple years now.  He has testified before on the illegality of this Administrations actions.  he's one of the Republicans we want more of, don't agree with him much but he will logically and intelligently discuss and argue issues, instead of name-calling and fear-mongering.....where did all those Republicans go????

        •  i heard their criticism of the republican (0+ / 0-)

congress that has given him a pass at every turn, as well.  there is definitely enough criticism to go around here - definitely enough - even with us - maybe if we had yelled louder with better facts, we could have been heard sooner!

but the real issue now is how do we undo the damage - and, quite frankly, i am glad they are on our side - and we, theirs - it builds our strength and gives us a better chance to succeed in stopping bush and undoing the damage!

          •  I'm hoping this is a good step also... (0+ / 0-)

unity of Americans would be a best first step.  The good sign is we have same ideas of the Constitution and executive power.  I hope they can pull the Conservative party away from that friggen religious right and bring home and together those of all parties that can embrace our similarities instead of dividing over our differences.

not neocons find "cover" with the honest conservatives, then there is hope that we can get back to being the nation I remember for more than 40 years (discounting the last 12)

reagan started the ball rolling at dividing this nation - my feeling is that it was the result of his alsheimer's giving those who "controlled him" (think cheney, rummy, perle, etc) a foothold into power and an insight in how to "take" it with the "unitary executive" plan (then float a mental case and manipulate!)

let's hope that this IS a reuniting of all the GOOD people who believe in this country.  the old school republicans remember how the system used to work - where the day after the elections, the two parties got down to the business of running the government - NOT pushing an agenda.

  •  They're all agreeing that we all won't agree on (9+ / 0-)

everything, but we all agree that our civil liberties and safety have been violated and diminished with the Bush Administration and it's power grab.  They are calling on all political parties to sincerely see this as an overall assault on American values and integrity, and and American issue, not a political party issue.  Fein just said something to the effect that just because the President says he can do it and it's legal, does not mean that and is something to stand up against and question.  He is definitely debunking Cheney and all his public statements about speaking up only feeds the insurgency and aids and abets the enemies.  In fact, he said in essence that that is UnAmerican and ludicrous for us to believe.  They are advocating for American insight of the Constitution and Executive Power and the three Branches.  It's interesting.  I'm not catching everything now, but I like what they're saying.  Just a little suspicious as to why now, after all the death and destruction.  Perhaps it's because Bushco is finally falling to shreds and they can.  Who the hell gave that lawn gnome all this power?  Hmmmm, come to think of it, Rove is about to get chopped off at the knees.  Timing is everything, and perhaps quite revealing.

Odds that news coverage of this will claim they are doing something that Democrats haven't had the courage to really do since they took the majority?

It's fantastic that Republicans are finally standing up -- not for any administration -- but for the Constitution and the people regardless of political party, but I have a sick feeling this will somehow get spun as Republicans taking the lead in curtailing the executive branch -- just in time for a Democratic President (although, to be clear, I would be just as furious if a Democratic President behaved the way Bush and his administration have).

I say, "Welcome to the fight!" but I will be very angry if the spin on this becomes "Republicans restoring democracy" rather than the truth that some in power, and some in the constituency, are finally waking up to what they've been enabling and are joining the fight we started (without much media coverage) years ago.

am i in an alternate universe?

bob barr is speaking right now on cspan2 regarding the abuses of patriot act and national security letters.  he is saying we cannot wait for 30 years for the courts to rule, we cannot wait for another election cycle to restore the bill of rights - we have to do it every day in everything we do!

the chairman spoke of the unique crisis in our nation due to the state of "permanent war" since 9/11 that could go on into the next century without the restoration of checks and balances in our government.

a former conservative deputy attorney general, bruce finn, spoke of the abuses of executive privileges to cover up everything from the failure in iraq to the abuses in katrina.

the cookie crumbles, folks - and it is happening fast!

at the end of the day if we lose this battle, if america loses this battle it won't be because we sat by and let it happen!

Finn is talking about the presidential signing statements.  he spoke of repeated abuses of this administration at the beginning.

this group has finally realized the deep threat that is to our country - finn is issuing a challenge to ALL americans to protect the constitution.

he is asking that all american aspirants for 2008 sign an american freedom agenda to support "these principles".

this is the conservative coaltion on presidential power.

go watch this - i am amazed that conservatives are saying that there are a lot of conservatives DO care about civil liberties.    Republican Ron Paul is talking about the carelessness of the "strict constitutionalist" term in selecting judges - and he is saying following article 1, section 8 - regarding declaration of war!

the group that represented the ABA when they sent a message to the president and Congress that they opposed Bush's signing statement. It was just about the only non-Demcoratic chip to the armor during the 108th and 109th Congress.

Barack Obama - I'll never see the threat of terrorism as a way to scare up votes, it's a threat that should rally this country against our common enemies

That would take me back to the scene in Braveheart where King Edward I is on his death bed and his daughter-in-law whispers in his ear that she's just screwed William Wallace.

the right wing finally gets that if the constitution is screwed for us on the left, it is screwed for them too.  Took em long enough.

  •  This is actually my fear... (0+ / 0-)

...tempered by the hope that ANY reduction in the amount of Executive Power and or restoration of checks & balances is a good thing.

The Democratic leader's intransigence on the vital and absolutely necessary Impeachment of Cheney/Bush is going to hand to the Conservatives a political victory that they will be able to exploit for the next 50 years.

    Get used to hearing this:

"Remember when we had that really bad President? Who saved you? The Republican Minority, not the weak Democratic Majority."

UUUGGH! I just vomited in my mouth a little.

The Multinationals and the Religious Right have identical goals: Profit from war, ignorance and fear...and the GOP is their Party.

had the drumbeat from impeachment started with the dems who hold a one seat majority in the senate (where conviction must take place), then the effort would have been seen as partisan and not practical.

by having those OUTSIDE the democratic party start the hue and cry, then this will truly be a bipartisan effort for the good of the country.

frankly, i don't care WHO gets credit for starting this - the ONLY important issue that exists here is the removal of this administration before they can do more harm - and it has begun - we are watching history, folks - real, living, breathing HISTORY - live in a nation where we live!
