            I hope that inherent in this Pelosi/Murtha/Obey compromise bill plan is the implicit agreement that all sorts of moderate Ellen Tauscher-type New Dems will now vigorously take to the air with exactly that message, that it is Bush who is holding up funding and who is deploying unprepared American troops, so Bush should just shut up and sign this funding bill asap!

            Letting Bush always frame this debate stops NOW!

            The Ellen Tauscher New Dem wing got their bill; they better be out on the airwaves vigorously defending this bill and attacking Bush 24 x 7 now.

                Was also thinking of how it was very important to Eisenhower (and Truman) to emphasize the civilian aspect of control of the military--and not appear in uniform as President.  For Bush to wear faux military gear and use soldiers as stage props is the most insipid, hideous irony of his "Presidency," IMHO.

        For active duty soldiers to appear IN UNIFORM at a political event is a violation of the military's rules of conduct.  I suppose the President as C-in-Chief can order them to appear and they must do so, and perhaps the administration can argue that it is not a partisan event such as a campaign stop, but that just seems very wrong to me.
            The President should not be using the military as props in a political fight.  He's politicizing the United States military.

            The pusillanimous weaklings in the Senate combined with a solid hysterical right-wing Republican block WILL give him exactly what he wants:

            a funding bill with NO conditions or limitations whatsoever. And if he doesn't get it he'll veto and demand they go right back and authorize something he likes.

            As long as Lieberthug holds the senate hostage Bush knows he only has to hold tough and he'll get exactly what he wants. Either Senate Democrats will give in to Lieberthug's blackmail or he'll switch parties, throwing control of the Senate to the Republicans.

            So, Bush will end up getting what he wants. That's why some sort of "compromise" is pointless. They might as well pass an in-your-face bill setting a timetable for withdrawal, since Bush is going to veto it anyway.
            
            The Congress needs to set down a marker and draw a line in the sand and just say "NO!" to Bush's war. And if Republicans and weakling Democrats block it, fine! Lets' have an all out political war on the real issues War Or Peace -- not on some meaningless side point like "benchmarks" or "timetables" that no one will ever agree on!
