Short but not Sweet

Wed Mar 28, 2007 at 09:57:34 PM PDT

For a long, long time so many Americans have been calling for removal of American troops from Iraq and reduction of American involvement there to a very low level, 'minimum necessary. Yet -- nothing has happened! Is it just beccause of one little man, W? No....
Here is why:

In view of the '06 Congressional election, in view of all the polls and revelations about financial corruption in the White House and just about everywhere else, and the obvious conflicts of interest between our government and the military industrial complex, led by Halliburton, not very much has happened. The thinking is always 'non-binding,' and whatever is done in the next few weeks will not have much result.
There is a reason for this: No one in the government who is in the know really wants us to withdraw from Iraq or lower our military committment there until there is more stability - regardless of how long that takes.
It's because of oil, industry and the Bush spleen, but keep in mind the Bush incentives are: Money.  Oil and money.  Halliburton, operated out of Dubai, getting all the oil field business in Iraq and, if W has his way, Iran too - there is your real game plan and motivation; and Congress is essentially backing this position. We have permanent military installations in Iraq. We have a fortress embassy there; we intend to stay there forever! A few faint voices, Jimmy Carter among them, have pointed this out. The Times prints it. But nothing happens. still, nothing happens, and again, nothng happens. And it wont happen. The anti-war 'movement' in Congress is a sham!  In it's way, it's as bad as Bush! And that war has long-since taken on a life of its own.
If the Iraq war had been brilliantly conducted and made short and successful, the Baghdad museum protected, the people cared for and the water and power quickly restored -- all the things that could have been planned for, you would hear few complaints.  It is because the war was botched that we are so upset and have all the call to end the war.
Even in the face of that, the war goes on and it will - for a long, long time. And now you know why: Congress wants it; of course big business wants it; the dead-in-the-water Administration wants it, so -- we will all get it and pay for it one way or another.
Congress Wants This War!!!! For if they did not, we would not have it. Well, now you've heard it here - go on, dispute me! :) Tell us, what will happen, and when?  Nothing will! You know why: hidden in plain sight.
Because Big America that runs everything wants us owning Iraq!

  •  too bad when you didn't pay attention to the (0+ / 0-)

bill passed by the house and in front of the senate that REMOVES funding for a permanent embassy...

really - must you come to the table so poorly informed?

  •  We Didn't Conquer the Government (0+ / 0-)

We got a solid majority in the house, razor thin majority in the senate where Republicans can sustain any veto.

The war party still holds the Supreme Court, the Commander-in-Chief, our dominant information systems, and the activist pulpit.

We don't have enough power yet to turn a militant war party onto a new course.

Systems of government have consequences. Any idiot knows what we need to do about a thousand issues: climate change, social safety net, war, empire, workers' rights.

Accomplishing what any idiot knows we need, under our system, is a whole nuther matter.

We are called to speak for the weak, for the voiceless, for victims of our nation and for those it calls enemy.... --ML King "Beyond Vietnam"

    •  The success..... (0+ / 0-)

The success of the war cabal is evident in your commentary.  Sure we have a "solid majority" in
the House and are razor thin in the Senate -- yet
"non-binding" obtains, is brought forward. As long
as it is there, and as long as W. wields the veto,
nothing will happen. The Dems can say 'we tried'
and look good; in fact, they did not try hard enough.
I repeat: If Congress wanted to stop the war, they
      could.
But it would have to be around the veto, which surely will happen, and they know it.
Is the point too obvious to accept?

  •  Have you been backpacking in the wilderness? (0+ / 0-)

Maybe you've been locked up in a sensory deprivation tank?

Or did you just come to shore after sailing across the  Pacific with no radio?

Try checking out the news, you might learn something.

    •  And what would I learn? (0+ / 0-)

What I would learn is "non-binding" blunders blindly ahead.
Maybe my point is too simple: The Dems fuss and fume and pass legislation knowing it will be vetoed and
      ignored.
So, if they were really serious, what else can they do?
Well, I return to my backpacking -- when the Dem
Congress really does something along the line of
deeds matching words, call me on my cell!
      Thank you.
