      It's hard to do with a transcribing machine, but even harder when you have to stop and grab the remote to rewind, then back to typing....etc.

  •  Recap (rough) from memory

    Rocky start with the Iraq war appropriations bill taking place at the beginning of the hearing.  flip-flopped the usual order with R Senators going first in the questioning.  Not any real substantive questioning, mostly just firewalling from Sessions, Hatch, Cornyn, et al., though Sampson did nearly perjure himself under questioning from Spectre.  Leahy and Shumer asked general questions, nothing gotcha, but Cardin and Whitehouse really shook the house, getting audibly upset and asking with great incredulity about Sampson not keeping a file on the two year project to fire the US Attorneys.  Sampson answered I don't know, I don't recall, and variations upwards of 50-60 times (I'm probably undercounting).  He tried to explain the term "Loyal bushie" as well.

          I have Comcast digital and I only get 1 and 2.  I'm going to start calling once a week to complain.  If they can have the soap opera channel and the game show channel, surely they can find room for C-Span 3.  MSNBC and CNN only showed Sampson's opening statement, but spent hours covering American Idol.

      Here is where I think Sampson could be in a lot of trouble.  If he is lying about this, and I sense that Whitehouse thinks he is, he'd better hope that file never shows up anywhere.

    Whitehouse pointed to the venal nature of inexperienced political hacks firing experienced prosecutors. This goes directly to the CENTRAL line of Sampson's (and AG's defense): that it was an objective, "aggregated" "performance-related" review. This claim is getting shredded. Among other things:

    1. There is no paper trail -- and a real "objective" "aggregated" "performance" review would HAVE a paper trail -- rigorous evaluations, documents, etc. Sampson's testimony on this is truly mind-boggling.

    2. A random email by Goodling wouldn't suddenly get a NC attorney off the list.

        Responding to questions from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., Sampson rejected the notion that the dismissals were ordered by young or inexperienced Justice Department officials.

  Okay, so just in the short time I've been listening in, Sampson accidentally confessed to committing a felony: "I didn't intend to mislead McNulty" (ignorance of the law is no defense).  

  He also deflected questions about his qualifications to be employed in his previous position as Dep. AG, by throwing responsibility for decision-making for the firings right back into the laps of Gonzales, as AG, and Miers, as president's counsel.

  Thank goodness for the arrogance of fools. He really thought he was going to show up and snow the Senate.

    And the Senate is a cakewalk compared to what the House hearing are going to be like!  He admitted that Gonzo was lying to Shumer, and laid the blame on Harriet miers as well. Clearly perjured himself on several occasions.  When they find the 'drop file' he says doesn't really exist, then he'll be toasty.

          I think the hunt for missing docs is one of the prime drivers of Leahy's thrust today.

          He's doing good investigative process...and building a case by flanking towards the truth of how many docs were actually generated, where are they, and if they are missing, what happened to them.

    get over is Orrin Hatch's admission that he remembered that the discussion about firing US Attorneys began in 2005.  

    In resoponse another comment I made about Sampson having tried exactly one case, Terminus noted the following:

    Hatch was pushing Sampson for the Utah AG position that went to Brett Tolson after Tolson slipped the rider into the Patriot Act!

        I'm on dail up and a little slow but found the transition pretty smooth.  Also, when folks are taking the time to make a live blog available, I think that they should be given a tremendous amount of slack.
