Saturday Morning Political Cartoon: Crazy Fucking Hippies...!

    This is a cartoon that originally ran several weeks ago, on a Vermont State Democratic Blog called greenmountaindaily.

    The text for this cartoon was essentially written by the one and only Kagro X, who, as I’m sure everyone has duly noted over the past few months, has been utterly ripping it up during his tenure on the Front Page.

    I have to admit that Democrats have been doing us proud during the past few weeks, so some may feel that this cartoon has less of an edge now than when it debuted at greenmountaindaily, back in the ancient days of, um, February, when the new Congress was still catching its first infant breath.  The dynamic seems to be shifting, and undoubtedly certain Dems have been kicking some ass in these myriad hearings, but I still don’t see any reason for the blogospheric types to let up on the pressure.  If anyone feels I’m unfairly trashing the Dems, let me know in the comments...

   
    Just for good measure, I’m tossing in a teaser for a diary I am currently working on:

    that each frame of your cartoons shows the crowd of people moving forward, till their stepping out of the frame (crossing the line), and are shouting Impeachment!
    Then in the last frame the people have  retreated back into the frame with disappointed and confused expressions.

       I wanted it to have the feeling of the citizens really flirting with pushing out of the frame, out of the categorization that they're boxed into by the media and the gov leadership.  I wanted to have them edging out of the 'window', stepping out of bounds -- not in so much an aggressive way, but out of sheer palpable desire to express the truth.

       After this was published at greenmountaindaily, it got cited over at Digby, and I was happy to see that they homed in on a similar aspect, about both the Dem and Repub leadership believing they exist outside of the realm where the citizens are neatly boxed in (or however they had articulated it).

      I'm no good with paint.  The brushes are too subtle....  I'm a cave-man, and my hand shakes, so I can only paint with my fingers; it doesn't shake so much if its pressed to the canvas (folks will probably think this is snark, but it's not).

      So I always marvel at works in oil, or Heaven-forbid, watercolor.

      How do you get that sepia effect?  I think you'd said you just draw with ball-point pen on loose-leaf....?  And then you photograph it...?  But....

       Jimmy Page and some of the other Guitar Gods asked Jimi how he got that unearthly growling sound out of his guitar, and according to legend anyway, Jimi said some kind of weird thing about re-wiring the pre-amps so that the sounds come out backwards, and pour gasoline on your pick-ups and do a voodoo chant for good measure.  Page tried to re-wire his amp according to what Jimi said, but, nope, no magic.

      Just nod if you're following my analogy....

          If those on the far right were truly the good Christians that they claim to be, they would turn away from those hypocrites who have hijacked our government.

          They support Bush when he has violated several commandments:

          Thou Shalt Not Kill
          Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness
          Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother

          He also has ignored the words of Jesus when he asked us to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I still shudder at the thought of him burning his college classmates, laughing at the woman he condemned to death, sitting around as our people died in the towers, and ignoring the poor people who were dying in the flooding from Katrina until it was too late for many of them.

            But I've seen it firsthand.  My Dad is hardcore rw, used to be lw, like the neocons.  For him, abortion and homosexuality and terrorism justify anything and everything.  I do not believe there is any horror he would not shrink from supporting, because he is so obsessed with those "evils".  I happen to agree with him that abortion and terrorism are evils, but that they justify turning a blind eye to any other kind of abuse of power, any other kind of oppression, even the spreading whirlwinds of death our foreign policy has turned into?  I truly wonder how any sane person can agree with that.

              Abortion is also terrible, if it is just to kill the baby. However, there are so many special circumstances (rape, abuse, and physical problems) that can be present that I prefer to "judge not." God has given us all free will and it is not for me to tell another what to do.

              There should be plenty of education and support of our youngsters so that they are able to have good judgement. Raise your children well and then hope that as adults they make good choices.

              I agree with President Clinton when he said that abortion should be safe, affordable, and rare. Like with prohibition, the forbidden usually florishes in the hidden darkness. That that is not forbidden can be handled calmly in the light of day.

        Now I have a couple more ideas that are tied to elephant jokes, but the drawings just aren't turning out right. Wish I had your gift for drawing. Your work always looks so professional. I'm really surprised that you don't do it for a living.

      I kid, I kid.  Actually, I love the whole rich texture-y feel of it.  Suddenly I'm jonesing to do some for-real pastels on for-real rag paper.

      I love to mix media and I particularly love to use the cheapest media I can find.  Ball point pen.  Used envelopes.  Sharpies.  Proletarian tools!

      Plus a nifty cameral my friend won at work.  THAT was a lucky stroke!

      But I gotta say, I love the smoothness of what you do.  I make a thousand lines and hope form emerges.  You make one line and it comes out perfect.

      I tried to make a rubber stamp design the other day.  For some reason, I am obsessed with rubber stamps.  I want to make an illustrated book, using rubber stamps.  But I just can't get myself down to the minimum number of lines you need for a rubber stamp!

      I like the feeling the multiple lines give that things are always moving.  When one looks at something, one's eye is constantly moving over its surface, jumping around, and it is moving at the same time, so even an edge is really a whole bunch of change.   I try to convey that.  But mostly I make a mess!
