Walter Reed Hearings - Panel II Live Discussion

After that gut-wrenching testimony on Panel I, I literally needed to step away, but now that the second panel is on, I want heads on a platter, starting with Kiley who lied through his teeth last week when he said the WaPo expose was much ado about nothing.

Some honor there, Kiley.

      Because every time they trot out the canard that he doesn't support the troops, Murtha can say, "Well, we just held hearings on how you screwed over thousands of troops around the corner.  Maybe the American people are sick of your lies, bullshit and hypocrisy and want a new approach."

              The process by which some issue becomes politically viable is a complex one.  It needs public awareness, emptional appeal, and political will, at a minimum.

              All of these necessary components have come together at this time for the Walter Reed scandal.  Let's be thankful that the political will to pursue the problem exists today.

      The question isn't whether "the Dems" knew that the Bush administration "competitive sourcing" program, which extended across ALL federal agencies, would cause problems.

      The Republicks, who controlled Congress until recently, passed legislation labeled the "Federal Activites Inventory Reform Act" in 1998.  That act, which required federal agencies each year to prepare lists of jobs which could be performed by the "private sector", was the foundation of "competitive sourcing".

      Not only public employee unions, but also individual Democratic members of Congress and Senators, knew exactly what was going on, with the Republicks pushing their ideologically-based program.  But they didn't have the votes to block either the mis-named FAIR in 1998 or the government-wide requirement that each agency operate its own "competitive sourcing" program which the Bushies enforced from the time they took control of the executive departments.

      So please place the blame where it belongs, squarely on the Republicks and their ideology, instead of on Democratic Party legislators.  

      The sorriest thing which has occurred over the past four or five days is the emergence of the Republick talking point which blames "the bureaucracy" or "the federal bureaucracy" for the problems at Walter Reed (Cheney's being quoted by MSM as I type this, saying precisely that).

        (thanks for the civics lesson) but it does not mean that a Congressperson or Senator cannot speak up about an issue. John Murtha has been speaking up about the war well before the Democrats got the majority in Congress, and he got a LOT of press throughout. And if our side knew about this, and did not speak up, then they are almost as bad as the Republicans. And I don't know how any of these politicians could NOT have known. If we, the people who are Democrats, are trying to hide that our side might have known about this, and did not speak up, then we are no better than the Republican constituents.

  Kiley:  I'm a co-chair of the mental health task force.  ... PTSD, TBI...these are complex patients who are severely injured in (complex) ways; its a long-term challenge (in treating these patients).

  Shays:  I feel like these men/women are in prison...that's the way it feels to me.

  Weightman:  we didn't have a foolproof system to (hand off patients from inpatient to outpatient care).  

  Shays:  write these reports; (make available) to congress and the press; how do you know when the problems are being addressed; when its said the problems are being addressed but they are not.

  Bascetta:  we're frustrated when we bring problems to DOD and they are (not fixed).  Problem is that rules and regulations are so monumental.

  Congress has given everything we've asked for.  How do we best apply these resources.  There are issues, gaps (in the process).

  Shays:  doesn't believe that they have all of the resources they need.
