Allstate Screws Katrina Victims Again: The Update

The State of Louisiana fired back today in what's become the ongoing saga of Allstate vs. Everybody Who Got Their Ass Kicked in Katrina- or didn't.

This first attracted attention with the news out of New Orleans last month  that Allstate had begun dropping homeowners policies under a rule that allows cancellations if storm damage hasn't been repaired.

The kicker? More than a few of the properties in question - in fact, thousands more than originally reported -either recieved no storm damage, or were fully repaired months ago.

It should be noted that of the all the major insurers in Louisiana, AllState has been the only one pursuing this aggressively; Not Farmer's, not USAA, not Louisiana Farm Bureau, not Liberty Mutual, not even State Farm, the current eminence gris of Mississippi.

Well today, the Louisiana Insurance Commissioner ordered Allstate to immediately reinstate 4,772 policies that it had cancelled. Read all about it in the Times Picayune today. No word yet on whether Allstate will choose to comply, or follow the lead of State Farm in Mississippi and elsewhere, which has been diaried in detail by PolitiCalypso.

What you can do

• IF you've gotten a cancellation notice or if you just want to send the good guys an "atta boy", contact the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
• For those living outside the disaster zone, dump your policies with Allstate while you still can... and before they dump you.
• Ask your representatives to support The Insurance Industry Competition Act of 2007, which seeks to remove the industry's exemptions from anti-trust laws.

  over 200,000 worth of damage got a whopping $7,600.

  Ugh, those people make me sick.  It became apparent that things were really wrong in the first days after the hurricane.  They wanted me to sign a statement that we had flood damage in our house before they would release any funds for living, even though the national guard had blocked people from even entering our city.  (Bay St.Louis)  In any case it went from bad to worse over the next few months.

  I imagine there's a nice warm seat for all them insurance agents in hell when they get their.

•  I have a friend who works for "Papa Allstate"

  as she calls it. She feels it is the best employer in the world, that it takes care of its employees, nurtures and protects them as a parent would, blah, blah, balh ... that it can do no wrong. She feels it will always take care of her and the rest of its employees, in the salaries it provides, the benefits, etc. She says it is making the American Dream come true for her. She doesn't look at AllState as a partner or good neighbor, or any of those other advertising images the jingles jingo. She looks as Allstate as God on Earth.

  Too bad AllState doesn't deliver a fraction of what she perceives for its customers.

  that us dkossers will participate in this.  It's but one of several things this website can do to help the Gulf Coast and, in this case, Louisiana.  We are too few in number and poor to exert as much influence as is needed.  

  The energy it took to topple Coulter would be of greater benefit here - doing this.
