Identifying the "Coulter 100"  (updated 3/15)

Thu Mar 08, 2007 at 04:00:17 PM PDT

As has been reported here in other diaries, since her CPAC speech this past weekend, at least four newspapers have discontinued carrying Ann Coulter's weekly column.  Despite pressure by the Human Rights Campaign and others, United Press Syndicate, which claims to distribute the column to "about 100" newspapers, it steadfastly refuses to drop her from its roster of columnists, or even disclose what papers are carrying it.

So, I am compiling list of newspapers which carry the toxic column, with contact information.  I've started by fleshing out the work of Media Matters and HRC with names of editors, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses.  Next, I'll start contacting newspapers in my area, and beyond, to ask them whether they carry the column, to identify as close to the full "hundred" as possible.  I could use the help of Kossacks around the country to do the same.
Most Recent Update: Mar 15, 10:52 pm PDT - Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (Ontario, CA) 9th paper to announce dropping Coulter.

  •  Have you checked out Media Matters' list? (8+ / 0-)

    From their site today:

Coulter's "Macaca moment" spurs newspapers to drop column

In the wake of right-wing pundit Ann Coulter's recent remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference about Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, at least three newspapers -- The Lancaster New Era (Pennsylvania), The Oakland Press (Michigan), and The Mountain Press (Sevierville, Tennessee) -- have decided to drop Coulter's nationally syndicated column from their opinion pages, according to an article on Editor & Publisher's website.

A July 2, 2006, New York Post article about allegations of plagiarism in Coulter's last book, Godless: The Church of Liberalism (Crown Forum, 2006), reported that her column "is syndicated to more than 100 newspapers." Media Matters for America has compiled a confirmed list of daily newspapers that currently carry Coulter's column:

That was my emphasis.  Click HEREfor full list.

I got the Media Matters list second hand through HRC, and it forms the basis of mine.  There are problems with some of their contacts and e-mail addresses.  But, thanks for directing me to their full list.  I'll work on verifying the contacts, adding snail mail info, etc., and do an update.

Even though they now have more than the original 9, it is still far short of the 100 the syndicate claims to be feeding.  So, I hope folks will check their local papers for me.

I haven't checked out whether Coulter's column is on Yahoo, but if that's verified, then there are at least two options to send feedback.

      http://surveylink.yahoo.com/...

takes you to general feedback for the Yahoo home page.

For Yahoo News, you can also go to:

      http://help.yahoo.com/...

When you get there, you have to enter a query -- like "Does Yahoo endorse Ann Coulter?"  The response will be a list of possible answers to your question, probably none of them relevant.  But on the right will be a box, labeled: Are we answering your questions?  Your choices will be:

      __Absolutely!
      __Usually
      __Sure
      __Hardly
      __Not even close!

Submit "Not even close," and a pop-up box appears that lets you send in feedback. No reply is promised, however.

These may not be the ideal departments at Yahoo to contact, but they are at least something.

  •  Let's finish her off!! (0+ / 0-)

In response to the Elko, Nevada paper saying that they would keep Coulter's column because they wouldn't be told what to do by gay and lesbian left wingers (see their editorial on another diary of daily kos).

    I replied to rzuraff@elkodaily.com:

    Dear Ms. Zuraff:

I am not gay or lesbian. I'm the married mother of two young children and the daughter of a disabled  war veteran.

I have to ask you: what useful or productive dialogue does Ann Coulter bring to political discourse today? All she’s really good at is using hate speech for a cheap laugh. She will use anyone as a punching bag.

I’m offended by her comments, including:

    1. she called a group of 9/11 widows "witches," saying: "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much. . . And by the way, how do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce these harpies?"
    1. she suggested that Senator Max Cleland (D-GA), a triple amputee, was "lucky" that he "lost three limbs" in the Vietnam War: "Luckily for Cleland's political career and current pomposity about Bush, he happened to do it while in Vietnam"
    1. she said that it would be better if someone poisoned Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stephens with rat poison, after she disagreed with a judicial ruling.

What other Republican columnist uses that kind of hate speech? No one.

Newspapers have a responsibility to the widows of September 11th, war veterans, presidential candidates, and all other Americans to stop being a platform for this type of shameful discourse.

Please put a stop to her insulting and infantile speech by replacing Ann Coulter’s column with a conservative columnist who writes with decency and civility.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
